Never say never (the locura)

This is the Italy of the future, a singalong country, while outside is death all around 1

Now that they realised this is the new trend
All these rappers have got a band
The autotune even when they talk
All dressed up like the X-men
You cry scandal, they look like Marilyn Manson in 2020 2
New punks, old teenagers
I dye my hairs and I'm up to date
There’s the scumbag appealing to the lowest common denominator
But the intellectual is too snob
Adapt your character to your audience
Italy is a big sit-com
This stuff that was already old five years ago
Now it sounds like avant-guarde, they call it ‘it-pop’
The major put you under contract if you’ve chosen the right dance and you’ve become viral on Tik-Tok

We’re young and hungry, we’re slaves of the hype
Nobody buys albums anymore, there’s Spotify
Stadiums are open again, but not theatres nor live concerts 3
Maybe I’ll try some football tricks, 4 never say never
We’re young and famous, we’re slaves of the hype
You don’t need programs if you’ve got the approval
Stadiums are open again, but not theatres nor live concerts
Maybe I’ll try some football tricks, never say never
Never say never...
Never say never...

Now that they realised this is the new trend
Everybody’s selling their asses to some brand
All these strikers scoring goals
But all it matters now is making cash 5
They pump up ‘trash’ for the LOL
And then you’re surprised of the exit polls?
The shit wins if it laughs
Until it looks credible
Why is taking us so long to decide
"We fucking had enough of all this stuff”?
All these peddlers, frauds and jackasses
Disgust me, fuck the millions
“The bad intentions...” - what’s the matter? 6 I was wrong
I didn’t get how twerking
Should mean fighting the patriarchy

We’re young and hungry, we’re slaves of the hype
Nobody buys albums anymore, there’s Spotify
Stadiums are open again, but not theatres nor live concerts
Maybe I’ll try some football tricks, never say never
We’re young and famous, we’re slaves of the hype
You don’t need programs if you’ve got the approval
Stadiums are open again, but not theatres nor live concerts
Maybe I’ll try some football tricks, never say never

Never say never
I don’t know if I bend, I don't know if I break7
Never say never
I don’t know if I made myself clear, it depends on the price
Never say never
You call it future, but it’s just progress
Never say never
It looks like the Middle Ages but more smart and fashion
Never say never
If it's true that the ends justify the means
Never say never
I don't ask for good taste, but at least for good sense
Never say never
I've seen better, I've done worse
Never say never
Right, pull the other leg, I’ll juggle the ball if I can 8

We’re young and hungry, we’re slaves of the hype
Nobody buys albums anymore, there’s Spotify
Stadiums are open again, but not theatres nor live concerts
Maybe I’ll try some football tricks, never say never
We’re young and famous, we’re slaves of the hype
You don’t need programs if you’ve got the approval
Stadiums are open again, but not theatres nor live concerts
Maybe I’ll try some football tricks, never say never
Never say never...
Never say never...
Never say never...
Never say never...

  • 1. clip from the Italian cult series "Boris", a parody of Italian society and customs. The "locura", in the title of the song, comes from another line of this series: one of the character describes what the Italian TV audience likes to watch as "locura", from Spanish "madness", meaning that Italian people like foolish, stress-free things.
  • 2. probably a reference to Achille Lauro, an Italian rapper who has participated to the three last editions of Sanremo (the most important Italian song contest) causing much scandal for his unconventional costumes, sexual ambiguity and controversial lyrics. Many accuse him to be just a poser, exploting the scandals to gain popularity.
  • 3. artists have harshly criticised Italian government, that allowed the Italian football league to continue even during the pandemic (even though stadiums are closed to the audience), but on the other hand they kept closed museums, concert halls and theatres.
  • 4. ”palleggiare” is literally “to juggle”, specifically a football with one foot. The sense of the verse is: since the government is not letting artists do their job, but football players can, I’ll try to be one of them.
  • 5. football players are often criticised for their excessive salaries.
  • 6. reference to an argument occurred on stage at the previous Sanremo edition (2020) between two singers, Bugo & Morgan (during their song "Sincero"). The two had an argument the previous day, and Morgan prepared an alternative version of the lyrics in order to insult the other, starting with those words. Bugo then left the stage, and Morgan played dumb, saying "what's the matter? Where is Bugo?". This became (and still is, to this date) a popular meme on the Italian web.
  • 7. pun on an Italian idiom, derived from the classic culture, which is "I break but I don't bend", meaning "you may defeat me with forceful methods, but I won't change my mind". It also has sense the other way around ("I may adapt, but I won't give up"). This idiom is mixed with another, "non so se mi spiego" ("I don't know if I made myself clear", see next verse).
  • 8. I tried to adapt the original pun, which is on the word "palla", meaning both "lie" (something not true) and "ball", as in "football". This is a referece to the chorus lyrics.

Thank you for the detailed translation! The lyrics are really clever, my favorite of this year's Sanremo.
