The Firulete

Who was the odd fish1
that told you -Hey kid!-
that the Firulete’s day’s are gone?
They may play more Rock,
Merengues 2 and Congas3
but it’s always a good time
for a Milonga.4

You, just go on and
let some twit talk smack
and shake your Firulete .
This arabesque that the
Milonga embroidered on our soul
is our homegrown beat, and that’s all!

But listen, very carefully
pay close attention,
now admit that nothing else
parallels this swaggering sound.
For God's sake, confess that this beat,
so spicy and sweet,
bubbles up beneath your skin
and makes you more loving.

But listen, ha ha, very carefully
pay close attention.
Now admit that this beat
isn't a blooming carnation!
It is the carnation, the balcony
the outskirts, the back alley
and it’s the crazy Firulete of a past mad love.

You, just go on and
let some twit talk smack
and shake your Firulete .
This arabesque that the
Milonga embroidered on our soul
is our homegrown beat, and that’s all!

To me, translating the word “firulete” is almost like translating a proper name: it borders on rudeness. It means arabesque, gyrations and contortions.
