Idiomatic translations of "kick the bucket"
Meanings of "kick the bucket"
"to kick the bucket" simply means "to die". However, it is extremely coarse, even vulgar slang: It would never be used in a formal setting, and especially not within earshot of the family of the deceased, unless one wanted to be deliberately offensive!
There are many theories as to where this idiom comes from, but the OED (Oxford English Dictionary) discusses the following: A person standing on an upside-down pail or bucket with their head in a noose (slipknot) attached to something above him, in order to commit suicide by hanging himself would then kick the bucket out from under his feet so as to cause sudden strangulation and thus commit suicide.
However, the term nowadays does NOT in any way specifically imply death by suicide: it simply means to die, from whatever cause!
To expire
"to kick the bucket" bedeutet "sterben".
