Forefather

Descend from the sky
From the high stars
Race that watches the world
Golden cattle and spine-strength

Son of the sky, black-fur
Old man of the soil, ground-dweller
Källeräine, tangle-haired
Old father, full of power

Let time pass, mourn some time
Return back to your father
Behind the lock of the iron hut
Behind the clasp of the copper house

Mankind was born of you
Our blood runs in you
Forefathers grew from you
In the hard veins of the rapids

Let the carcass fall, forefather
Step on your best string
Feed your smallest cub
It will become the strongest bear

It will have a son, which will have a daughter
Which will have a cunning son
From it a race, a golden cattle
Mankind is sired

Let time pass, mourn some time
Return back to your father
Behind the lock of the iron hut
Behind the clasp of the copper house

Mankind was born of you
Our blood runs in you
Forefathers grew from you
In the hard veins of the rapids

This song is based on Finnish mythology. Ancient Finns believed that the bear was a god which had descended from the sky. It was the forefather of humans.

When a Finnish hunter killed a bear, he would organise a great feast to honor its spirit. At this feast people would sing to the bear's spirit, urging it to return to the sky. Then it could be reborn as a new bear. This ritual was practised well into the early modern era.

The bear's true name was considered too sacred to be uttered, so people used nicknames like "black-fur" and "tangle-haired". The modern Finnish word for bear (karhu) is also a nickname.
