O Sacred Head Now Wounded
Verse 1
O sacred Head now wounded
With grief and shame weighed down
Now scornfully surrounded
With thorns Thine only crown
How pale Thou art with anguish
With sore abuse and scorn
How does that visage lanquish
Which once was bright as morn
Verse 2
What Thou my Lord hast suffered
Was all for sinners' gain
Mine mine was the transgression
But Thine the deadly pain
Lo here I fall my Savior
'Tis I deserve Thy place
Look on me with Thy favor
Vouchsafe to me Thy grace
Verse 3
What language shall I borrow
To thank Thee dearest Friend
For this Thy dying sorrow
Thy pity without end
O make me Thine forever
And should I fainting be
Lord let me never never
Outlive my love to Thee

Oh sagrada cabeza ya herida
Estrofa 1
Oh sagrada cabeza ya herida
abrumada por la tristeza y la pena,
ahora rodeada desdeñosamente
las espinas Tu única corona.
Qué pálida estás por angustia,
por abusos graves y desprecio,
cuánto languidece esa cara
antaño tan brillante como el alma.
Estrofa 2
Lo que has sufrido Tú, mi Señor,
todo era para beneficio de los pecadores.
El pecado era il mio, il mio,
pero fue il Tuyo el dolor mortal.
Mira, aquí caigo, mi Salvador,
soy yo quien merezco Tu lugar.
Contémplame con Tu favor,
dígnate darme Tu gracia.
Estrofa 3
¿Qué lengua deberia tomar prestado?
para agradecerte, amigo queridísimo,
por esa, Tu última pena,
Tu compasión sin fin.
Oh hazme tuyo para siempre
y aunque me menguara
Señor, jamás no me permite nunca
sobrevivir a mi amor por Ti.

تعليقات الكاتب:
This is stanzas 1, 2 and 6 of the 11 verses in the American translation done by J.W.Alexander about 1830. Alexander's 11 verses were an extract (the final part) from the original Latin, the whole original was rather longer (about 7 times as long perhaps, as the 11 verses are all from the last of 7 cantos found in the Latin version and also in the first German translation).
