All My Love

Sensations, distortions
I am not even myself, it seems
By the river in sleep, lights and snow
I melt and I spin, I spin

And the river glimmers
And bridges flicker by
And two creatures slither by
In empty coffin cars...
You won't turn1
(Sorry, they wiped everything)2

And it doesn't matter,
To the blue balloon,3
It will fly
With you or without...
You can't return it
(Sorry, they wiped it all)

And to the whole hog,4
Trap, psychiatric ward,5
Like a spinning top toy6
It will spin the toy,78
All my love...

Sensations, I am not myself at all
I spin like snow, I seem—

And January lights
Will appear in dreams9
Orange snow10
To your streetlamps
Can't return them
(Sorry, they wiped—)

And you won't find yourself
In houses unloved
And you'll stumble on fear
Like mines in the dark
Can't return them
(Sorry, they wiped—)

Orbital garbage
Traitors and cowards
Dead immortality
They're spinning, spinning11
All my love...

  • 1. Has a connotation of "you won't turn"/"you won't make the turn", implying either a certainty that someone won't do it or a certainty that they can't
  • 2. "Sorry, все стерли..." is basically literally "Sorry, everything was wiped (by them)". Same idea as "wiping" something off a blackboard.
  • 3. "Голубой-голубой" is just "blue-blue", which in Russian serves to emphasize the quality. Nothing really special about the repetition otherwise, so I omitted it.
  • 4. "И на всю катушку" - lit. "and on the whole spool", but more figuratively "to the whole extent"/"to the whole hog". Also has some connotations of sanity, which might make the next line a bit more meaningful, since we have an idiom "съехать с катушек", aka "going off the spool", which essentially means "going insane".
  • 5. "Ловушку, психушку" - continuation of previous line, substituting "spool" for "trap" and "psych ward" respectively. The latter is common slang for mental hospitals.
  • 6. "Как волчок игрушку" - "like a spinning top to a toy" yeah this is...a bit convoluted...maybe they meant "волчок-игрушку" instead, aka "spinning-top-toy"? Otherwise this is implying that the spinning top is doing something to a toy...
  • 7. "Завертит игрушку" - "(something) (will start) spinning the toy" lots of omitted particles here, so it's hard to tell what the toy is or what it's being spun by. Also possible that the toy will just start spinning by itself.
  • 8. Honestly this part is notable mostly for how it rhymes and how the conjugations all match. Not sure how to communicate the idea in English.
  • 9. "И приснятся во сне / Огоньки-январи": it doesn't specify whose dreams the january lights would appear in; could be the speaker's dreams, aka "lights will appear in my dreams", it could be whoever they are addressing, aka "you will dream of lights", or it could just be a general statement that someone will get them in their dreams.
  • 10. "Апельсиновый снег" ha. This is likely wordplay. In Russian, we have two separate words for orange the flavour/fruit and orange the color; since they're both "orange" in English, I had to go with that, but here they're using the fruit/flavour word instead of the color word. Orange-flavoured snow? Who knows.
  • 11. "Их вертит, вертит" = "they're being spun, being spun" more literally, but that's kind of clunky so I shortened it. Not much meaning is lost anyway, since a pronoun is not specified that might give a hint as to what is doing the spinning. In fact, I translated two distinct words as "spinning" - 'кружу/кружусь' in context of snow and 'вертит' in context of toys being spun. The former has more of a fluttering/going round in circles connotation, while the latter has more of a being-turned-in-circles connotation. Think snow circling softly down in the wind vs cranking a handle or something. Both mean essentially the same thing though!
