Запрягу я тройку борзу (Zapryagu ya troyiku borzu)

Troika Gallop

Версии: #1#2
I’ll harness the best three to the troika 1
The black-maned horses
And I’ll rush through the freezing night,
Straight to my darling
And I’ll rush through the freezing night
Straight to my darling

Eh, you horses head off,
Rush across the steppe,
How I will see my darling,
My heart’s enjoyment.
How I will see my darling,
My heart’s enjoyment.

Out of habit, the horses know,
Where the beloved country is.
Hooves break snow,
And like an arrow I will soar 2
Oh you, my dear horses,
Move faster than a falcon *
Don’t lose the gold of the day,
There are so few in this life

My heart beats with joy,
We will be living for fun.
While curling rings of twine,
Love for a maiden, 3
While curling rings of twine.

I’ll harness the best three to the troika
The black-maned horses
And I’ll rush through the freezing night,
Straight to my darling
And I’ll rush through the freezing night
Straight to my darling

To me, music is a form of speech, and just like speech, music should be heard to all regardless of barriers in place. So by translating you're letting other people open up to a world that is alien to them, a world where many who listen to the Russian, German and French music I listen to, is not strange or weird because they do not understand what the singer is singing. By having translations music can share cultural and political ideas, or really just ideas, around without barrier, and allow for discussion over meaning and purpose instead of trivial pursuit.

1.
A sled/cart thing pulled by three horses
2.
I wouldn’t say an arrow rushes, this is just me as an English speaker looking at the metaphor he is creating here. Arrows don’t rush, they fly or “soar”, throw, whiz, you get the point
3.
I know “Devushyek” means “girls” but this is the Red Army Choir singing a folk song, so maiden makes more sense here to me
*Look, I like to make fun of metaphors, it is fun. He wants his horse to run faster than a falcon. Horses can run at ~40 MPH, while the Peregrine falcon can fly at ~240 MPH. For his horse to accomplish these speeds he'd have to break both of the falcon's wings.
Their folk songs are personal favorites of mine, this one is pretty good as well. Feel free to leave comments on suggestions or corrections that need to be made or discuss the meaning of the song below.

Сударушку цензура, похоже, вырезала, а переводчика не предупредила 🤨

Дни златые = золотые дни = golden days Wink smile

This is because in the video added here they do not sing this stanza. According to the site’s rules, lyrics must agree with the video.

Interesting...interesting. I wonder why it isn't?
Edit : Found out that Stanza isn't in the iTunes. I'm very interested in this now -_-
Edit Edit : I'm just going to cut that stanza out unless someone can find those lines. I'm very curious as to why the second stanza's lyrics is different than what is sung. It sounds like it should be a part of the song, it looks like it should, but I've just listened to at least ten different versions of the song from across youtube and all of them are the same. That is weird. Now I personally think the Red Army Choir is out to get me. First with me not realizing Troika Glaop's lyrics were actually the lyrics to a completely different song, then finding the actual lyrics for Troika Galop only for the second stanza to not exist in any other song. I think in a past life or another universe I kicked Alexander Alexandrov's dog and he was mad at me or something ;p

What the hell is this? Are you try to kill this song?

Пока кудри в кольца вьются
While curls are curling - it’s about hair and it’s not-translatable

Anotoli, do you have any suggestions? Regular smile

Kashtanka1965Kashtanka1965    съб., 02/02/2019 - 10:11

Yes. I think the man's hair as well as other attributes, attracts woman and makes them feel good about themselves. A man, is a typical peacock! Of course, you can't translate something like this to English, You just have to compromise. And why are you calling me Anotoli?

Анатолий, я прошу прощения за опечатку. And btw, 70% of men I know are shaving their head, and, personally, I find it kinda sexy  ☺️

Vladimir, this is for you to enjoy. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aaWjZ2WvVCc

My suggestions:

1/ Как увижу дорогую,
Сердцу станет веселей!
The moment I see my darling
My heart will rejoice

2/ Пока в сердце радость бьётся,
Будем весело мы жить!
Пока кудри в кольца вьются,
Будем девушек любить!

As long as our heart beats with joy
.......
As long as the hair is into locks
We'll be loving girls

And if we stop (for no reason) curling our hair, does it mean we are going to get out of the closet?

There are such a long and technical explanations after each song. It's so tiresome.

Igeethecat, Future Simple is not used in Conditional clauses unless it's a request.

I must be stupid. Is it the horses flying like an arrow or is it the guy on the troika flying like an arrow? Joy beats while in the heart?

It is a common idiomatic phrase to say "x flys/soars/*insert similar word here* like an arrow". It means go really fast, And rush, go really fast is kinda what it would mean without the idiom

Anatoli (oh, dear, I hope I spelled his name correctly this time😉) is questioning your translation :
And like an arrow I will soar
In the original, the horses soar, not ‘I’ 🤔

BratBrat    съб., 02/02/2019 - 16:33

Well, the translation's name reads "Troika Galop", so it might be a kind of dance described in the translation.

Vladimir4757Vladimir4757    съб., 02/02/2019 - 19:46

Hey...in Tachanka, unless I translated it incorrectly, a line goes : "The budyonny’s gunner's cart" so I mean if a Russian horse can have its own machine gun cart, then surely they can dance and frolic and do other human stuff. I'm 99% certain that the fighter pilots mentioned in Tachanka were also horses, and that the guy singing Along Peterskya Street was a horse. Their golden days were wasted after WWI when they were no longer needed for war.

IgeethecatIgeethecat    нед., 03/02/2019 - 00:30

LOL, it was Bro’s sarcasm - you spelled it with one L, and galop is a dance. BTW, in Russian, gallop is spelled галоп (with 1 Л) Wink smile
