Between snow cones and grenades

"Today paradise costs half"
Says the seller of happiness
Fleeing from hell, finally travelling
Your holiday in a free gift package
Group photos under the monument
Tourists at the concentration camp
And on the scorching beaches
Abandon all hope, ye who enter here1
And stay/So stay (Summer)2

Right where you are
How are you doing?
Are you okay?
And stay/So stay (Summer)2

Sweaty butchers in queues in museums
Luxury hotels in the villages of the Pygmies
Healthy mind and crumbling body
Antology of the intelligent holiday
Your life away from a lifetime
The wind blows and the storm howls3
Between snow cones4and grenades
Abandon all hope, ye who enter here1

And stay/So stay (Summer)2
Right where you are
How are you doing?
Are you okay?
And stay/So stay (Summer)2

Right where you are
How are you doing?
Are you okay?
And stay/So stay (Summer)2

Nevertheless we never leave
We just walk away a little
We give life an hour
so on the return it will look new
We really never go
beyond our soles
Step up, keep the time
Spin as the wind spins

Right where you are
How are you doing?
Are you okay?
And stay/So stay (Summer)2

Nevertheless we never leave
We just walk away a little
We give life an hour
so on the return it will look new
We really never go
beyond our soles
Step up, keep the time
Spin as the wind spins

Behind your shoulders a bite of happiness
In front your return to normality (everyday life)
Work and holy days of obligation
Abandon all hope, ye who enter here1

Right where you are
How are you doing?
Are you okay?
And stay/So stay (Summer)2

Right where you are
How are you doing?
Are you okay?
And stay/So stay (Summer)2

  • 1. a. b. c. It's a famous quote from Dante's Divine Comedy in the Inferno part (Hell). It's what's written on the gate for Hell.
  • 2. a. b. c. d. e. f. g. h. In the lyrics it's written "E-state" that means literally "And stay" but it's obvious he also wanted to say "Estate" that means "Summer" (also because in Italian there are not dashes used in that way, so it's an hint of the duplicity of the word). I've also translated it with "So stay" because in my opinion it works better in English.
  • 3. He's quoting a song of the Italian Resistance during WWII.
  • 4. "Granita" (singular of "Granite") is sweet flavoured crushed ice, it's a sort of snow cone but it's slightly different and it has no actual counterpart in English. They are the coloured things people are throwing each other in the music video. There is this funny paronomasia between "granite" and "granate" that has been necessarily lost in translation and it convey the mood of the entire song.

I think a better translation for "Lì dove siete" is "Right where you are" (For me this line isn't a question)

Thanks for this translation! May I use your annotations to help me translate the song into Portuguese?

And just take a look here > https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snow_cone
I'm not sure about synonyms for this sweet, but it seems better to say 'between snow cones and grenades' then 'between granite (a mineral) and grenades'. ;)

Yeah, sure, go ahead. :)

I struggled to find a translation for "granita" because it's a tipical Italian sweet that has no actual counterpart in English (it's similar to snow cone but it's different, and well, you know, don't touch Italian food or Italians get mad) so I was not sure if it was better to translate it incorrectly or to put the word between quotation marks and to explain it in the notes.
Well, probably you're right, it's better to give the readers the general sense of the meaning and to explain it better in the notes.

I love this song, and have been listening to it all summer. Anyway in il Regno Unito I would ask for a granita and get a crushed ice (semi frozen) sugar based drink, with a fruit or other flavouring. I think you should translate granite as granita. Not only is it well understood, but it's exactly what I would be served if I asked for granite here in Italy.

In the US they would probably now call it a slushy, but slushy is a less accurate translation to use for this song!

A snow cone is something my grandmother might have ordered 50 or 60 years ago, before people were less sophisticated and less international. It is also less accurate because typically it is shaved ice, rather than granular/ice crystals.

Ciao bello!

Ps Granite (the English word) is a type of stone. I'm from Aberdeen in Scotland - the Granite City, because most of the buildings are constructed from granite.

Hi :) I've done a translation now, too, because I did a video with subtitles, but I don't think its useful to have two parallel translations here on this site. Therefore I want to add some things - when I would translate it slightly differently or when I think an explaining footnote does make sense (only suggestions, as some things are more an interpretation and I don't know if I'm right).

free gift package: free holiday package (these preorganized holidays)
Sweaty butchers: adding some explanation like "it’s about crowds of sweaty tourists and contains a metaphorical reducing
of men to pieces of meat"; and maybe "butcher's shop" is better, otherwise it sounds like the person who works in the butcher's shop
Antology: meaning "manual of the intelligent holiday"
Mente sana e corpo fatiscente: reference to the latin phrase “mens sana in corpore sano” (“a healthy mind in a healthy body”)
Your life away from a lifetime: Your life adrift for ages
never go beyond our soles: meaning "never leave our comfort zone"
keep the time: maybe alternatively "keep/stay in sync with time"
a bite: a short taste of
