From the road to a stretch path

Listen, friend! Don't leave your way to take a stretch path1

Since you're so in love
So old and with so little shine
Since you're so in love
So old and with so little shine
The chicken you have beside you
Made you lose your way

Listen, friend! Don't leave your way to take a road

Oh, but since I'm so simple
I make this song clear
Since I'm so simple
I make this song clear
Friend, I don't leave my natural path2
To walk through a cattle road

Listen, friend! Don't leave your way to take a road

Oh, but we were just talking about
Why he3 left Andrea
We were just talking about
Why he left Andrea
Friend, you're leaving
A way for a stretch path

Listen, friend! Don't leave your way to take a road

But hear me, my friend, you've left
poor Geraldina to be with Dorotea.
Don't talk about your husband, woman.
Woman of bad feelings.
All you say has turned into a story
Because the fatal hour has not arrived yet.

Listen, friend! Don't leave your way to take a road

Oh, oh, oh, oh, sing and don't cry, Eliades4
Because when they sing, my dear,
Hearts cheer up.

Don't talk about your husband, woman.
Woman of bad feelings.
All you say has turned into a story
Because the fatal hour has not arrived yet.

Oh, run away, run away, run away from the overseer!5

But this man is in the way
He doesn't let me pass

To the man... man... mancunchévere6
Walks kinda cool, he killed his
mother, mom

  • 1. Maybe 'shortcut', but it's not explicit
  • 2. It's literally a path made by the passing of people (footsteps, or maybe wheels)
  • 3. It could also be a formal you (why you left Andrea), but I find "he" more likely.
  • 4. This is a reference to these lyrics of a very famous Mexican song. Eliades is a member of Buena Vista Social Club
  • 5. Or the tithe/rent collector, or a head shepherd
  • 6. I haven't found a meaning for this. Not even one example of usage

Oh, that's my fault. I didn't know anything about the band when I did the translation. Should've at least read a Wikipedia article lol. I'll put the possible reference to compay Segundo in a footnote, since it seems it's being used as the normal compay un this one. That Eliade was there the whole time? It seems I didn't even notice that there was something there. Well... I'll wait till my Internet gets better and edit the song.

Is "mancunchévere" from the liner notes? I wonder if it's short for something, like 'manito con chévere". Or since "como chévere" is the next line, maybe it's "com' chévere". We need to get the liner notes. Find comments on Genius.

Nunca he visto mamá como señora.

Lo de "I've fallen in love with you" debe haber sido un descuido. No veo cómo llegó ahí.

Eliades Ochoa Bustamante is a Cuban guitarist and singer. He began playing the guitar when he was six....Although he looks like a guajiro, and he still wears his trademark cowboy hat, his roots are in the son....He plays the guitar, tres and also a variant of the guitar, with two additional strings.

Should it be translated flee from or flee to? Ay, húyanle, húyanle, húyanle al mayoral.

from

"to" would maybe be something like "huyan al mayoral" but it's not likely that construction would happen naturally.
