Here are a few things that I think only exist in Germany:

  • "Generally", there's no speed limit on motorways (but instead too many construction sites and limits for environmental or noise reasons, so that limitless speed actually doesn't work).
  • The opposite of "etwas umfahren" (="to circuit something with a vehicle") is "etwas umfahren" (="to knock something over with a vehicle").
  • As building the new Berlin airport takes a lot more time than expected, its bosses have once announced when the announcement of the announcement of the opening will be announced (currently around the middle of 2019 – perhaps).
  • The constitution of the federal state Hesse has still officially got the death sentence, but it can never be applied as it is forbidden on national level.
  • The term "Heimat": It describes a home where your roots are; or where you feel comfortable; or where you currently live; or where your family and friends are; or where your heart is; or where you dream to live; or or or…

Try to top this! :P

In good old USA,
- white people came to America, put a flag into the ground, and claimed it is their land. A black man comes to someone else's apartment, places a flag, and claims it is all his - he get's jail time. 1
- you can get off murder charge by claiming temporary insanity, but try this on a cop after running the red light: officer, thanks for stopping me and letting me know, I am fine now - still get a ticket. 1
- tax cut gives 80% to the richest, results in a trillion of extra debt, and will be fixed by taking away social security (pension) and Medicare (health insurance) from 80% of population.
- Trump is elected.
- Trump can marry a foreigner, bring her parents to US, and still can separate parents and children claiming it reduces illegal immigration. All Mexicans need is to supply a new bride, after all, it's time to dump the older, stale one (plus, she has been slapping his hand away in public) so why not a hot Mexican this time?

1. These were jokes by a comedian whose name escapes me

I just came upon a quite interesting video (or rather, sequence of pictures) about Russia. It's very long and the (repetitive) music will soon get on your nerves, so : 1/ switch off the sound, 2/ don't watch the whole video in a row - keep some stuff for later ! It's funny (Russian humour) and there's no Putin around, as far as I've seen. Here it goes :

Enjoy ! As they say, "ЭТУ СТРАНУ НЕ ПОБЕДИТь!!!"'

No safer situation than walking with a backpack.
Thieves can't run with a big backpack (you'd be faster ;) ) and a fishy looking local carryring a tourist's backpack would rise anyone's attention. You may have slit open your outside pockets though; so don't put anything there you wouldn't like to loose.
I was stolen at my hotel room, when I wasn't in.
They took the cash but despised the credit card. (it was not in Mexico!)

I found this interesting. Thank you for mentioning it.
How many times people in your countries kiss? In Serbia, regular number of kisses is 3. And you can see two men kissing at formal events like wedding ceremonies, New years eve and other holidays or when they see each other after a long time, if they were godfathers, or relatives etc.

I sometimes see parents kissing their children in the mouth (on tv or Facebook). Is that a custom in your country? It was really weird when I saw it for the first time.

I've rememered one more little thing "only in Serbia" - the family tree

We have so many words for introducing our family members. For example, "aunt" can be "tetka", "strina" or "ujna" depedning on whose sister or wife she is.
Fun fact: "Tetka" was synonym for an old bat for years, but now it means "young and desirable girl, usually without her own children"
Our parents or grandparents call us "sine" (son), even if we are girls!
I can tell to my sister:"Brate, nemoj da budeš dosadna", literally "Brother, don't be so annoying". :D
Words for -in laws are a bit weird too. The father of the bride and the father of the groom call each other "prijatelj"(friend).
And so on, and so on...

In Africa, when somebody introduces you to a guy and say "he's my brother", you'd better ask : - Brother same-father same-mother ? If yes, then there is a good chance that he's really a brother, if not, he may be some remote cousin, or just some neighbour living in the same village for example...

We have so many words for introducing our family members.

In Germany, we use the funny sounding "Schwippschwager" ("Schwager" means brother-in-law, "schwipp" doesn't really mean anything) for family members not related by blood that we have no specific name for. For example, your brother-in-law's brother and sister would be called "Schwippschwager" and "Schwippschwägerin", respectively. But it's getting a little outdated.
Nowadays we use the full connection ("die Schwägerin der Nichte meines Schwagers" = "my brother-in-law's niece's sister-in-law") if we know it.

Other than that, have fun and enjoy! I've thankfully never been kidnapped, mugged or robbed at gun point, a lot of the stories you'll hear are from people that didn't take these precautions seriously.

Credit cards (at least where I visit) are uncommon, most people carry cash. We keep our cash hidden away like in a small bag underneath our clothes because you run a higher risk of being pick-pocketed. My uncle likes to keep cash in his socks or strapped to a flat-like fanny pack under his clothes. We never carry backpacks unless it contains nothing of value.

In France, almost no one carries cash anymore, some elders still do (by habits I guess), but most (if not everybody) use credit card here. And since we can pay by "Sans Contact" (we don't have to use our credit pin to buy something if it's >30€), it has raised a lot.

That's pretty smart, even if others think it look dumb it saves you the heartache of realizing you've been pick-pocketed when you were least expecting it.

I live in the US (NY to be more specific), where we use card more often than cash (I still keep cash around just in case. My reply was for when people visit Mexico, where using a card is more of a privilege than an actual necessity since only tourists, the middle class or higher have access to one.

Only in Czech Republic (we've got 3 historical parts-Bohemia, Moravia and Silesia):
•People from Prague (Bohemia) hate people from Brno (Moravia). In general, Czechs hate Moravians...and Silesians...and Slovaks...and everybody else. People in Czech Republic are very racist. An immigrant-hating Japanese, a weed-smoking pirate and a greedy Slovak meet each other-that's not a joke, but our elections.
•We use "ty vole" (literally means "you castrated bull", but is used as "dude" or "man") nearly after every word
•You can hear here unique sound "ř" which doesn't exist in any other language
•Mushroom-picking is considered as national sport
•Everybody drinks beer. Czech beer is the best. Czechs don't want to hear about any Irish or German beer, that's "water".

Well, most people get paid through direct deposit, meaning it sits in the bank and it's easier for us to just use our cards. Older generations still cling to paying with cash, as generations heading that way (I'm talking 40s 50s) are slowly beginning to favor card over cash, since generations younger than that are already on the card form of payment.

And yes, American beer is disgusting; I much prefer tequila (or vodka if there's no tequila) over their piss beer.

Jadis escreveu:

Eh, about the same. It depends on the brew you make, mine is always dark and even then I try to grind my own beans when I can. I know they hate me when I order coffee and I'm very specific about sugar, because it's too "excessive", well it wouldn't be excessive if their coffee didn't taste so gross, I'm just trying to make the best of a bad blend of coffee.

Unique sound "ř" ??? I guess you know no Gàidhlig and no Gaeilge.
In the UK, many people from England hate the Irish, the Scots, and the Welsh.
In Scotland, one of our favourite Gàidhlig songs (written somewhere between about 180 years ago and about 150 years ago) begins
Tha mi sgìth de luchd na beurla, tha mi sgìth dhiubh le da-rìreadh
which translates to English as "I'm fed up with speakers of English, I'm really absolutely pissed off with them".
Despite that we tend to get on together, although only a fool would bet on us still being a United Kingdom 10 years from now.
As for beer: Czech beer is usually served very cold - it's a bit like Australian beer, it has to be served cold enough to numb the taste buds in the mouth. Scotttish beer is far more drinkable.

Yglf! I wouldn't dream of washing my tableware in such awful muck! Evidently the French and Italians are less fastidious about treatment of plates and cutlery than we Scots are.
For myself, I prefer Spanish coffee - I drink a lot of coffee in wintertime (because these days I'm in Spain during the coldest 5 or 6 months every year) and almost no coffee in summer (because I tend to be in England during the warmest 6 months of the year, and coffee there is at best marginally less awful than coffee in the USA, and at worst even worse that American coffee). I will always remember a Spanish restaurant in London where if I asked (in Spanish) for a cortado largo I would get a small cup half-filled with something even weaker than americano and a small jug of cold milk - that despite all the restaurant staff being Spaniards (in Spain I get a large expresso and hot milk). I guess they had been in London too long and picked up English ideas about coffee.

You forgot yo say that Czechs, Moravians and Slovaks equally hate the Roms.. perhaps having some reasons to. I was in Košice in 1991, little time after Berlin Wall fell, I parked my red Lada break (kind of Zhigouli) on an hotel parking for the night, and in the morning, the window was broken and everything I had left inside was stolen. Wenn I complained to the hotel receptionist, she immediately looked very scared (Western tourists were still scarce then) and said : OMG, it's the Roms. Czechoslovakian police showed up in exactly the same model of car as mine, only was it a white one. I had to declare everything that was stolen, with the value of each item in Czechoslovakian crowns (!) Of course, I never heard anything of my stuff any more. Košice is famous for its Rom area, Luník IX .

Well, there are so may ways of pronouncing Gaeilge (Irish) that you have to be listening to the right person to hear it.
In Gàidhlig (Scottish) most people who speak the North Hebridean dialect or live in the northern parrts of the South Hebridean dialect area pronounce r in the sequence "irde" or "irte" (where the d or t is the boundary between the first and second syllables of the word) or "ird"/"irt" (at the end of a single syllable word) in a way that sounds (to me) like Czech "r" follwed by Czech "ř". But I guess that it may not sound like "r ř" to a Czech.
(I know practically no Czech, and hardly ever hear any, but one of my daughters-in-law was born and brought up Czech so I hear the "ř" from her quite often.)

Only in Australia :)

Don't watch if you don't like spiders.

This Macca's sign

It's really not hard to find "only in Australia" content. As an immigrant to Australia it's definitely a culture shock. But to be honest, there's a lot of good stuff here that's very unique. The stereotypical weird stuff tends to happen in the outback in the Northern Territory, I haven't really seen much weird stuff in Sydney.

Only in Australia, things I found interesting as a foreigner:
- The slang: brekkie, arvo, maccas, bottle-o, Brizzie, grog, cbs (pronounced "ceebs), Straya, footy, avo, etc
- drop bears

I've heard that in Australia, those who do not die of heat and drought perish in floods (or skin cancer, true - or sometimes in collisions with kangaroos). Doesn't look too cool. I think I'll stay home. :/

It does flood a bit but not too badly in Sydney so I don't know a whole lot about if people actually die from flooding. And as long as you don't piss off the kangaroos they won't hurt you, as with many animals. People sometimes try too much to interact with animals and it's their downfall. :( They also get hit by cars a lot which is harmful to both the animals and the people. The skin cancer thing is very scary. Overall, as someone who moved here with previously no desire to travel here, I very much enjoy Australia in comparison to the USA, and Sydney avoids a lot of the crap that most of the rest of the country has to deal with.

▪ Italians will never show their national pride. Actually, they would never talk in a good way about the country and they would always make examples of other countries as a good model to follow. However, they turn into the most nationalistic people when there's a good reason to (a football match, important people like Leonardo Da Vinci, etc.).

Josh, it's like that in Spain and Germany too, you show even the tiniest bit of pride in those countries and you're immediately maligned as a fascist, but if it's a football game then all of a sudden it's ok to show patriotism 😑

Aww, that's cute! That reminds me of a portuguese girl I met a while ago who told me that people from Portugal call people from Spain "hermanos nuestros" 😊
