Текст на „Redemption Song“
- Old pirates, yes, they rob I,
Sold I to the ...:
Instead of we or us, Rastafarians say I and I. In this case, “I” stands not only for the speaker of the song, but for the collective group of African slaves that were abducted into slavery, and thus robbed of their sovereignty, culture, as well as their material possessions and natural resources.
- I:
me - In the Iyaric dialect, "I" is used in place of "me" to keep it in the nominative case and avoid making it an object.

From the bottomless pit.:
“Bottomless pit” refers to Africa in its immensity and wealth of resources, people and culture. As a continent it is the fountain of all human life… hence bottomless endless or timeless.
In addition the pit represents the holding area where slaves were kept on the coast of Africa while they awaited the slave ships representing a state of hopelessness and despair.
When Bob talks about being pulled out of the bottomless pit, he may be comparing slavery to the story of Joseph in the Old Testament of the Bible. Joseph stays above the unfortunate event of being sold off by his brothers. Similarly, Africans with power sold other Africans to slavery.

- We forward in this generation
Triumphantly.:
A reference to the massive strides that society has made concerning racism, specifically toward those of African descent.
We as black people continue to move forward in this time with never before seen accomplishments. Triumphant in our celebration of our accomplishment with total freedom from subjugation as our final goal.
- Won't you help to sing
These songs of freedom...:
Here, Bob urges people to sing songs of ‘redemption.’ This song was written after Marley was diagnosed with cancer.
As he says the line “all I ever have” he is talking about how meaningful his purpose was, and with these songs he is still aiding the fight because all he wanted was the redemption of the black people as he was a Rasta man. Rasta people call for redemption, repatriation and reparation.
- Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery.
None ...:
These lines were derived from a speech given by Marcus Garvey, a proponent of Black Nationalism and Pan-Africanism.
''We are going to emancipate ourselves from mental slavery because whilst others might free the body, none but ourselves can free the mind. Mind is your only ruler, sovereign. The man who is not able to develop and use his mind is bound to be the slave of the other man who uses his mind.''
Marcus Garvey is also a prophet in the Rastafari culture, which Bob Marley followed.
This idea that no one but ourselves can free our minds recalls an idea that predates the Renaissance, which is that if the mind is free, one can never be truly imprisoned. One example comes from “To Althea from Prison” by Richard Lovelace:
''Stone Walls do not a Prison make, Nor Iron bars a Cage; Minds innocent and quiet take That for an Hermitage.''
Mental slavery, Marley suggests, is the real slavery, the fundamental slavery from which one must free oneself.
- We've got to fullfil the book.:
Some say many prophets and saints shall perish before the end comes, but this only seems an excuse to stand idle in the face of injustice. This verse is Marley’s plea for action.
