Here's the thread that @BlackSea4ever made a one-off comment about discussing Stalin in another form, so here's that forum!
https://lyricstranslate.com/en/comment/765707#comment-765707

So then I'll start with my opinion : Stalin was a bottom-feeding, paranoid, egotistic degenerate. He was a tyrannical lunatic with daddy issues and paranoia. The Red Army Choir would be problematic if it wasn't for his treatment of soldiers after the war. His betrayal, sending millions who defended Russia (and the other Eastern European states that were rolled into the USSR at the time) was an insult. He was a tyrant who killed Jews, persecuted the masses and treated his people like cattle. From what I've read it seemed that the Communists took over Russians were now too poor, too hungry and too afraid to do anything about the mess they were thrust into. After Lenin's death (which is technically his fault Stalin was in power) Stalin began to reform the country in a direction that weakened Russia in the start of the second world war. If Stalin wasn't a feared dictator then his doctors wouldn't have been terrified to save his life after he stroked out in the middle of parliament (I don't remember where it was he died at, needless to say none of his docs wanted to help him). 26 million Soviets died in WW2 and I've read numbers that are as high as 6 million deaths at the hand of Stalin, 6 million Soviet deaths. Let that sink in. What kind of savior of the starving masses murders 6 million of his own? Imagine the British in WW2 killed almost a quarter of their soldiers after the war? Would we see the British as heroic in how they handled the war? Would we be honoring Churchill if he killed a quarter of British soldiers in acts of paranoia?

The fact is he didn't save anyone. So many ethnic and cultural groups were persecuted under his rule, It didn't matter who you were, you were either aligned with the Communists or you were against them. This is just a historic fact. And yet his people gave it everything to defend their homes and for what? Millions of fathers and husbands shipped to Siberia to die in the cold because some paranoid nut job with an ego a mile long thought they were going to kill him. People were starving because of "collective farming" and forcing everyone to live off of the backs of each other rather than allowing their country to flourish. This is who Stalin was, and now we can have a healthy discussion regarding this.

Where we are at politically in the world is more than a better time to bring up tyrants since a lot of people seem to forget what tyrants have done (America is backsliding into a dictatorship and it seems everyone and their brother in the state I live in supports up-ending the constitution and they don't even realize that's what they support). My teaspoon isn't of hatred at all, it's just I feel we should have a genuine discussion on the topic because I'm tired of reading people who praise and or support the man. I'm not endorsing hatred at all. Quite the opposite. If this starts a shitstorm so be-it.

Better leave those who are dead in the place where they are now and don't spread their shit neither "resucitate" them. As our smart cat pointed out nowadays there are enough hate sloshing around the world so better if hate don't came to stay on LT Regular smile We all know how those kind of conversations could end... Don't we? So, I think better stop here and be in peace, at least on LT.

This is not a suitable place to talk about politics. People come here to enjoy their time and translate songs to learn, as a pastime or to discover new music. If you want to discuss about politics, you can join a group of activists or a political association. If you want to learn about Stalin, I advise you to buy a history book about him.
What is the point of making people fight, may I ask? I don't know about any of you, but I've got more important things to worry about in my life than to start going on an endless rant about controversial political figures. If you want to learn, you can easily find your resources elsewhere, if you want to sow discord among people, this is not the appropriate place.
That said, I think the wisest thing to do here is to close the comments. No reason to keep this thread open any longer. If you are reading this, I would kindly advise you to refrain from commenting your opinion on the topic... unless you want to fight between blindfolded Stalin apologists and stupidly stubborn Stalin demonisers.

I have no interest to stir trouble nor would engage in [what I think] is a much needed political discourse. People I highly respect here, think LT isn’t an appropriate place for it. You say Stalin is dead, but there is a collection of songs dedicated to praising him. I will respond with a collection of those musicians, poets, writers that fell victim to repression - this should serve the purpose better, I hope.

The Internet is at fault for having been pressed into service without even a thought about how anonymity would allow every man and his dog to spout piles of nonsense and insults that would have earned them a bunch of fives or a night in the slammer in what some still call the real life.

The Internet is the realm of raw urges and childish regression. Twitter even rules out articulated thoughts by design.
A place where idiots are kings and common sense only barely survives in very consensual areas.

it is futile for a small citizen to discuss the true nature of a leader. because he has no clue who that leader truly is.
and if you tell him, he will not want to hear it. and call it conspiracy. world leaders are only a reflection of
the people they represent. You can hate Donald Trump or Hitler, Stalin or Benjamin Netanyahu.
but they are only puppets, in a quite literal sense, and a reflection of their Citizens.

I'd love to see a collection of those who were victims of Stalin or other tyrants, it's only fair and logical as those people deserve recognition to their fullest. I let my own cynical mind get the best of me and my own expectations. I personally try to argue with people on the internet to try and start a civil debate and was hoping something would come about but shortly realized I made a mistake after the first few responses. Instead of close the forum I left it open but am kinda glad given how fucking civilized people were in this thread. I try and debate people on the internet with civility, I try to, and enjoy doing so. There are brick walls but sometimes those walls are poorly constructed and it takes some reasoning to get through. If you can debate someone properly you can open their mind to differing opinions, and the goal is never to change their opinion. I never approach something like this hellbent on forcing someone's entire opinion to be shattered and force them to believe what I believe. Quite the opposite. I'll let them keep their opinion but let them also see the flaws in their arguments, see what's wrong with what they said or believe and let them come to terms with reality. I still have no clue what I was thinking or expecting out of this but in the end, I realized that I might have kicked a yellow jacket nest like the dumb son of a bitch I am.

I'll give people a few closing words before shutting this thread down. Let's at least walk away from here realizing we expected a shitstorm and miraculously, no one wanted to start one. That's an accomplishment in itself since usually saying Stalin's name summons three witches that are lead by Hecate hellbent on destroying man.

What is there to discuss? The man is dead, what happened happened and it's all history. Are things any better now in this age that we're living in? who knows, every person will have their own opinion about it regardless of what one person says.

Lyrics Translate is a site for just that, lyrics. People come here to translate, add songs, discuss music and sometimes the occasional off-topic discussions like what we're all up to and trivial information. I have a lot of strong feelings about who I dislike (I'm talking about politicians, heads of state --- from the past and present) but I honestly couldn't care less, unless I'm reminding people of their indiscretions and atrocities.

The point was, it is no longer argued that the consensus is not to have a discussion, Ellen, that those who forget history, are doomed to repeat it. This is my collection, it will take an enormous effort and help to continue it, but present times strongly resemble past. If a collection praising Stalin can be made in 2020, it is time we stopped pretending that this is normal.
Please help with the collection. There will be no adjectives, insults, just facts...

That too, keep history in mind and learn from it. That's about as many f*cks as I could give about it. At the end of the day, we're all going to be long gone and the cycle will repeat itself. Makes no sense to cling to something we couldn't control, especially when we didn't live through it. We all have more problems in our personal lives than to let politics and meaningless discussions take up all our time.

That's our problem Ellen, people sit here and act like what happened is done for. We have this issue in America where racism is apparently solved because the Civil Rights act was passed. Boom, the civil rights act made racism illegal therefore America isn't racist. And you look at how I was educated in a Southern school in the United States where US history ended at, guess what, the civil rights act. Jumping around here, but off a list from the top of my head; Gulags? Never learned about it. Stalin's betrayal? Never heard of it. That time we started millions of proxy wars in third world countries? Nope. How about when we gave a shit ton of guns to what would become Al Qaida so they can fight the Soviets in the '80s? Oddly enough we didn't learn about this either. The several broken arrow incidents were the good 'ol US of A nearly caused nuclear disasters? Yeah, didn't learn of that either. I didn't know what atrocities Stalin did to his own people because I was taught in school the Commies are bad, Capitalists are good and what happened in Vietnam wasn't our fault. If I was ignorant and saw Stalin as just a tyrant I don't know if I'd be as interested in Russian culture as I am. My interest in Russian culture came from a world view I had that was shattered. It seems now, the generation who grew up when it happened are now teaching kids history from a skewed perspective, from this "Us versus Them" (you can even say "US versus Them") perspective and that a country is evil and corrupt because of a tyrant and everyone in that country is evil. It doesn't matter what he/she does to his/her own people, their people are evil, like them. The minute we learn about World War Two we learn that America defeated the forces of Evil. not the Russians who gave so many more lives, who gave it their all in a dogged war. No, it was a bunch of Yankees who dragged themselves in half-way through the war.

My point is simple, and much like how BlackSea put it, those who forget history are doomed to repeat it. When I hear people deny victors rights
and the old adage "History was written by the victors" I think of the numerous things I've mentioned and just ask them if victors don't write rule books then why, why on whatever God you believe in's Earth do some people learn about the times the victors fucked up and other times the victors are these glorious heroes destined to save the world against evil because apparently, morality is just black and white. If we forget what Stalin has done, if we sit here and let Stalin's sins go forgotten we may forget that we the people have more power than we think we do. If we forget that a dictator abused his own people to win a dogged war and then slaughtered those who defended him in droves, is it too much to say we'll let one of those people come to power once more? To rape the backbone of the country, force them into doctrine, and let another country forget that the people didn't ask for this. And those who did ask for it, how certain are we they really wanted this, how certain are we they were ignorant to facts, didn't learn from the past or simply too afraid to say otherwise? We shouldn't leave history at "He was bad, end of story." We should tell the story as "He was bad because of this, and yet there's far more to the story." Let the books stay open so people learn from the past, not ignorantly believe the past is over and will never happen again. Thanks for coming to my TED talk, I'm closing this thread.

And your point being? what do you think you're going to accomplish on a lyrics site? I'm all for political discussions (my friends and family know better than to open that particular topic because then they won't get me to shut up), but that's the thing, it should be done where it matters. Do they actually teach us these things in school (I'm talking about US schools / Mexican schools)? No. The system failed all of us, they gloss over history like they're telling us "oh, btw this and that happened but enough of that now, it's all history anyway. Here's a quiz". 90% of what I know about history is from me personally going out of my way to learn it, schools could give two shits about what children actually learn. It weeds out the mindless "ask-no-questions" people from those who question everything.

I'm sure you have very strong feelings about what has happened in your country, a lot of people do. No one is saying we're sweeping it under the rug, I sure as hell ain't saying "It's all history let's forget about it". The argument here should be that WE THE PEOPLE put these morons in power (but let's not overlook that sometimes shady shit happens behind the scenes and they win regardless). So people need to get off their asses and vote, that BS mentality of "oh they have enough voters" or "my vote won't even count" needs to stop. We have the power to decide who we want to represent us, people have died over getting everyone their damn right to vote, USE IT.

I could care less about these dead men in general, I know what they did and how their actions have changed the very course of history. I acknowledge that. All I could do is repeat the same argument over and over to ignorant racists, I live in a red area for fuck's sake, where 70% of the population are POC but for some reason almost 90% of the vote went to to Trump. I am appalled by my area, I think an earthquake at this point is too good for us.

I think instead of repeating the same old discussion of dead men, stick in the "Well, history will repeat itself if y'all don't fucking vote. See what happened here and here? It's happened here and here in modern 2020. Wake up people, go vote if you haven't. Go protest, have so and so argument ready when you hear your scumbag racist neighbors make their usual comments. The more people are informed of things, the more likely they are to hesitate to say stupid shit. Sometimes. Small miracles.

It should be done where it matters. My thoughts exactly.
What matters on the Internet is something else entirely.
For instance, trying to remain civilized in an environment where every safeguard is off while vastly different people with vastly different views of the world are free to say anything that crosses their mind. That is no small feat.

This is very naive I think. Just have a look at the comments on social networks for ex and you'll get a more precise idea of the level of stupidity around. Yet all those people have the right to vote, just as you have. What is the percentage of voters who really understand what it is all about ? And who decided that, in a whole country, only 2 people where able to represent the people's interests ? Are those 2 people qualified for ? And did you compare the weight of your vote with the weight of millions, or hundreds of millions ? It's not even a grain of dust, it's peanuts. And anyway, why should we even care about people's interests ? Do they deserve it ? I don't think so.

Maybe you should watch a movie "The Platform" and calm down?

Few corrections,
> VOTE in USA on Nov 3rd lest your vote become as insignificant as it is in Russia! líadan is absolutely right!
> Jadis, don’t drown in the swamp - there are always deserving people. And anarchy isn’t an option or rather a scary proposition. Yes, government must represent and care about people. And people should have consciousness and honor.
> Oleg, in what world would myself or Vlad be your foe? Think about it as you couldn’t be more wrong.
Worshipping idols while excusing their atrocities is denying justice to all that were killed and oppressed. That’s why today they can divide us. That’s why today there are Muslim and Christian terrorists. That’s why today there’s racism that black and white protest! That’s why you are told that homosexuality is a problem, we are told democrats are pedophiles, and to lighten things up, Biden is a zombie.

Let’s at least go away recognizing we are NOT foes!!!

That's the thing, they don't even teach children the significance of voting. When 18 year olds vote for the first time, they have no idea what they're doing. It's not just voting for the president, there's other categories on that ballot! I forgot what year it was where they made the ballot so confusing, people voted for the wrong person! Instead of tuning in to slanderous 10-30 second commercials on TV about who happens to be running for what, schools need to be teaching children about current parties, what their policies are, how they will affect us in the long run etc. but no, let's teach them absolutely nothing of use.

Schools are glorified babysitters, kids don't learn anything. I work at a school, these 8th graders can't write a simple essay to save their lives. They're learning math that I learned in the 4th grade in the 8th grade, they're 4 or more years behind. You ask these kids about anything any of you have commented here and they'll shrug their shoulders, ask them about anything social media related, then they're the experts. I'm not surprised that 18 year olds now are so passionate about politics, because they're seeing everything for the first time, all the ugliness of our "land of the free and home of the brave" BS they've been spoon-fed all their lives. It's only the land of the privileged, those who can afford it, and it's home of those that will blindly die for their country and not become POWs and get called "cowards" by an asshat like Trump who dodged military draft not once but 5 times.

They don't teach you about the expulsion of the Moriscos in the 16th century, not the Mexican inquisition, not the Cristero war in the early 1900s, nada. Shit, they don't teach you anything not related to the US in American schools but we sure as hell learned more about other countries in Mexican schools, how is that even possible?
