Woo

「鑽飾」同「露西」都係出自披頭四嘅 “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds” 呢首歌。

Diary of A Madman

At the dead of night, through psychedelic music he finds euphoria
While the raging subwoofers blast at the eardrums (Then there comes light)
The blood vessels in his body are wired to a LaserDisc1
He drapes himself in diamonds, as if he were Lucy traversing the sky2 (journeying the world)

Roaming the universe, never enjoying enough
The twinkling stars are lures
Beyond which a symphony awaits

Those who cling dearly to life are obsessed with the new, and forget to loathe the old
The sentient beings3 gape their mouths open when they are famished
With both eyes and both ears
One shall engage in worldly pleasures
No need to chant sutras, nor recite mantras

The bystanders grab their popcorn4 as they watch the absurdities unfold
In another life, one might be cruising the Big Dipper in their dreams
With a wave of his pen he etches into his bone
The chronicles of his present life, a madman’s confession

Skin colour, identity, character, appearance
Thought, willpower, karma, genes5

All living things shall exhaust their fate6, as the universe is created and destroyed7, and what was once voidness shall regain its form8
Why do you yearn for impermanence, like the Cowherd and the Weaver Girl9 do? (Staring blankly at these four walls)

Observe, that the universe is merely a fabrication
And our births are tainted with spoilers
So raise those dice, and place them in the hands of God, woo~

Those who cling dearly to life are obsessed with the new, and forget to loathe the old
The sentient beings gape their mouths open when they are famished
With one heart and one flower10
One plunges into the turmoil of the mortal world
No need to chant sutras, nor recite mantras

The bystanders grab their popcorn as they watch the absurdities unfold
In another life, one might be leading the Exodus
As mountains collapse and waters part
Who will abide to these Ten Commandments?

His spirit rejoins his flesh
The madman suddenly presses his hands together, lays down his pen, and repents
The drifting clouds watch, as their previous incarnations11 are evaporated by the setting sun
The soul declares that in its remaining years, the body shall not
Be devoured by madness once more

Clinging dearly to life, yet he has had enough of it
The sentient beings are sowing eternal wounds
The never-ending cycle of karma and phala12
Holds no way out
So every day he writes the lines of the Great Compassion Mantra in his diary over and over again

Hoping the bystanders will drop their popcorn and see through the absurdities
In another life, one might just make a silk purse out of a sow's ear13
A window is shut, a chapter unfolds
Narrating the rest of his life, withdrawn from madness

Self-cultivation, security, a blissful career
Marriage, having a child, acquiring property
The family members share a collective karma
and eventually descend into madness once more

  • 1. The first letter taken from each syllable spells out L-S-D.
  • 2. This is a reference to the Beatles song "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" and its rumours about the connection with LSD.
  • 3. A Buddhist term referring to individuals who are not enlightened.
  • 4. The Cantonese equivalent here is "peanuts".
  • 5. The first four refer to the external characteristics of man, visible to the outsider; while the latter four are internal traits, only examinable by the self.
  • 6. The Chinese character 緣 in this context properly refers to the Buddhist concepts of Nidāna or Pratītyasamutpāda, meaning "dependent origination", but "fate" is a common translation and is used here.
  • 7. The original verse references the Buddhist timeline of the four kalpas: Vivartakalpa (成劫 - eon of evolution), Vivartasthāyikalpa (住劫 - eon of evolution-duration), Saṃvartakalpa (壞劫 - eon of dissolution), and Saṃvartasthāyikalpa (空劫 - eon of dissolution-duration).
  • 8. Referring to the Heart Sutra.
  • 9. From the related Chinese folk tale telling the pair's forbidden love and divine separation by the Milky Way.
  • 10. Here, the flowers allude to their symbolism of female sexuality.
  • 11. Water droplets.
  • 12. This verse references the Buddhist concepts of karma (cause) and phala (effect).
  • 13. The original verse literally means to "turn decay into immortality."

“Diary of A Madman” is the first installation to the Reincarnation Trilogy by Jer Lau. It describes the protagonist's spritual journey as he indulges in the madness of worldly pleasures, then awakens and attempts to repent, but plunges back into madness, as he realizes that the madness accrued through his life is ultimately bound to him by karmic forces.

This is not an easy piece to create as it alludes to quite a lot of spiritual and religious terminology. Credits to the Youtuber HeyChill for providing inspiration to this translation. The related video may be found here:
