Giacomo Puccini - O mio babbino caro

O mio babbino caro

O mio babbino caro,
mi piace, è bello, bello.
Vo'andare in Porta Rossa
a comperar l'anello!
Sì, sì, ci voglio andare!
e se l'amassi indarno,
andrei sul Ponte Vecchio,
ma per buttarmi in Arno!
Mi struggo e mi tormento!
O Dio, vorrei morir!
Babbo, pietà, pietà!
Babbo, pietà, pietà!

Why is James Red MacLeod given copyright credit for this, instead of Giovacchino Forzano? Forzano's libretto was written when MacLeod was 4 or 5 years old, so it seems unlikely that MacLeod wrote an aria in Italian that Forzano imported into his work. It's equally unlikely that MacLeod composed the music for this aria when he was 5 or 6 years old, as it is really improbably that Puccini would have adopted melody and orchestration done by an an American child of that age. Additionally, the physical distance separating MacLeod (in Virginia) from Puccini and Forzano (in Europe) also suggests that any contribution by MacLeod to the opera (whether musical or lyrical, and whether or not including this aria) can safely be ruled out.
