The moon is dark.
More hungry than dog,
More naked than serpent,
Struck, troubled,
If I've come to stand at your door,
Is it all out of greed?

(4) This poem was dedicated to Leyla Erbil, a prominent novelist and storywriter. Ahmed Arif and Erbil had long-term correspondence in 1950's. In some letters, Arif addressed Erbil as "Leylim". Literal meaning is "dark night; nocturnal", also derivation of her name, Leyla. (This name, Leyla, may be associated to an old tale of tragic romance, see: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Layla_and_Majnun) Apparently, Arif was in love, while Erbil considered him a friend. Eventually, she married another man. Arif got married too, but remained heartbroken.
(5) "The moon is dark" is quite a common phrase in Turkish folk poetry. Hinting that the moon is obscured by clouds or else, lovers can meet in secret, free from watchful eyes and rumours.
