Попранну власть Татаръ и гордость низложенну;

Гдѣ вся отвержена земная суета;
Гдѣ души праведныхъ награду обрѣтаютъ;
Гдѣ рядомъ предстоитъ послѣднiй рабъ съ Царемъ;
Гдѣ бѣдный нищету, нещастный скорбь забудетъ;

Заволжскихъ наглыхъ Ордъ обременяла власть;
Кипѣли мятежи, расли злодѣйства новы;
Простерся блѣдный страхъ по селамъ и градамъ;
Летало зло за зломъ, бѣды во слѣдъ бѣдамъ;
Умолкло пѣнiе, лишь бури тамъ шумѣли;
Гдѣ жили древнiе Россiйскiе Болгары,
Разженны вѣрою къ закону своему;
И руки чрезъ поля въ Россiю простирала;

Но древня злоба въ немъ была не потушенна;
Во смутны Россовъ дни онъ силы собиралъ;
Едва не выпустилъ Казань изъ слабыхъ рукъ;
Гдѣ онъ начальствовалъ въ войнѣ прошедшимъ годомъ;
Крилами мерзлыми отъ нихъ закрывъ Казань;
Подулъ изъ хладныхъ устъ морозы, вихрь и снѣги;

Пресвѣтлый полдень твой громчае буду славить;

Трепещуща луна изъ облакъ проглянула;
Отъ Волги поднялась какъ страшная гроза;
Убiйства, грабежи, насильства производитъ;
Въ Казанѣ полились Россiйской крови рѣки;
Посады въ ярости московскiе пожгло;
И кровь страдальческа на небо возопила;
Тамъ плачь, унынiе, сиротствующихъ стонъ;

Сокрылась истинна на время отъ Царя;

Въ забавы вовлекла неосторожну младость;
Соединилися къ стыду державы съ ней;

Которы искренно отечество любили;
При явной гибели не плакать не могли;
Стенать и сѣтовать дерзали передъ трономъ;
Ихъ слезы общую напасть изображаютъ;
Казалося, туманъ простерли вкругъ вѣнца;

Печаль ея лице, какъ нощь прiосѣнила;
Тоскуютъ вкругъ нея прекрасныя мѣста;
Унынье, разтрепавъ власы, по граду ходитъ;
Бiетъ себя во грудь, рѣками слезы льетъ;
На стогнахъ торжества, въ домахъ отрады нѣтъ;
Въ дубравахъ стонъ и плачь, печаль въ долинахъ злачныхъ;
Во градѣ скопища, не слышно пѣсней брачныхъ;
Отъ искры наглый бунтъ великимъ сталъ пожаромъ;
Единаго изъ нихъ мятежники убили;
Непримирима власть вооружилась громомъ;
Гдѣ правда отверзать осмѣлилась уста;

Возноситъ къ небесамъ заплаканныя очи;
Возноситъ рамена къ небесному Отцу;
Колѣна преклонивъ, прибѣгла ко Творцу;
Другою вкругъ нея слiянно море зла;

Въ комъ движутся мiры, кѣмъ все въ мiрахъ живетъ;
Прощаетъ, милуетъ, покоитъ и караетъ;
Царь пламени и водъ, позналъ Россiи гласъ;
Дни горести ея въ единый мигъ изчислилъ;
Онъ руку помощи простерти къ ней помыслилъ;
Мгновенно томную Россiю подкрѣпила;
Одѣла полночь вкругъ румяная заря;

Дай видѣть свѣтъ во тмѣ, подай совѣтъ ему;

Летящiй средь мiровъ, какъ вѣющiй зефиръ,
Блистательну черту по воздуху проводитъ;
Гдѣ смутнымъ Iоаннъ лежалъ объятый сномъ;
Съ пришествiемъ его чертоги озарились;
Взлетѣла возстенавъ во свѣтлый домъ небесный;

Весельемъ упоенъ, къ побѣдамъ въ свѣтъ рожденный;
Возненавидѣлъ трудъ, забавы возлюбилъ;
Ты зришься тигромъ быть, лежащимъ на цвѣтахъ;
Ты властенъ все творить, тебѣ вѣщаетъ лесть;
Ты рабъ отечества, вѣщаютъ долгъ и честь;
Тобой и въ райскихъ мы селеньяхъ возмущенны;
О Россахъ стонемъ мы, мы стонемъ о тебѣ;
Опомнись! нашу скорбь представь, представь себѣ;

Но въ прежнемъ образѣ очамъ его являлись;
Батыевъ мечь во грудь Олегову вонзенъ;
Георгiй братъ его лежитъ окровавленъ;
Отмщенiя ордамъ за смерть и раны проситъ;
Лiющiй токи слезъ и мракомъ окруженный;
Погасшимъ кажется Князей Россiйскихъ родъ;
Вельможи плачущи, въ унынiи народъ;
Которы въ жизни ихъ Ордами пораженны;

Роптая на тебя, сiи стоятъ предъ Богомъ;
Твой разумъ просвѣтить, отечество избавить;
И селы вобрази и грады разрушенны;
И тою же рукой Россiи въ грудь вонзенъ;
Забылъ, что Бога ты имѣешь судiею;
Взлетѣвъ на небеса, текутъ предъ Божiй тронъ;
Отечество, народъ, себя отъ зла спаси;
Будь пастырь, будь герой, тебя твой Богъ возлюбитъ;

Смущенный Iоаннъ не зритъ его во мглѣ;
Страхъ въ сердцѣ ощутилъ, печали на челѣ;
И сна прiятнаго Царю не отдаетъ;
Нещастенъ Царь, когда онъ друга не имѣетъ;

Мiрскiя пышности ногами попиралъ;
Отъ мiра удаленъ, отечество любилъ;
Увидя правду въ немъ, потупила свой взоръ;

Предсталъ почтенный мужъ, и честность купно съ нимъ;
Тебѣ, въ слезахъ онъ рекъ, я сердце отворю;

Мой Богъ меня смирилъ, онъ съ важнымъ видомъ рекъ;
Я въ нынѣшней ночи сталъ новый человѣкъ;
Адашевъ чаялъ зрѣть на небесахъ себя;
Оплакивалъ сей мужъ Россiю угнѣтенну;
Вѣрь, вѣрь мнѣ Государь, что Богомъ посланъ онъ;
Внемли отечества, внемли невинныхъ стону;
Злодѣйство бодрствуетъ, а правда угнѣтенна;
Довольно презиралъ ты самъ себя и насъ;

Имѣла вкругъ главы блистательны лучи;
Увидѣлъ Царь, ея, въ его челѣ черты;
И такъ воззвалъ къ нему: Будь мой сотрудникъ ты;
Вѣщай мнѣ истинну, ея намъ грозенъ видъ;
Но видъ сей отъ коронъ и троновъ гонитъ стыдъ;

Отъ истины отвлечь, Царя въ обманъ привесть;
Себя отъ здѣшнихъ стѣнъ и праздности уклонимъ;
Уединенiе научитъ насъ одно;
Мiрскую суету она пренебрегаетъ;
Въ пещерахъ и лѣсахъ ее находитъ свѣтъ;
О Царь мой! избери сiю обитель самъ;
Любовь къ отечеству не вовсе потушенна;
Увидишь славу ты парящу предъ собою;

Сподвижникомъ святыхъ отшельцевъ освященно;
Онъ въ малой хижинѣ великiй трудъ скрывалъ;
И Богу тамъ олтарь триличному поставилъ;
Возможно городомъ почесть пустыню ту;
Являютъ души къ ней усердiемъ возженны;
Который Сергiемъ изъ камня източенъ;
Которыми враги Россiи низложенны;
Ядущiй хлѣбъ сухой и въ потѣ и въ пыли;
Онъ зрится будто бы простый межъ ратныхъ воинъ;
Стоитъ трофеями и свѣтомъ окруженъ;
У ногъ его лежитъ поверженна химера;
Тамъ лавры Ярославъ имѣетъ на главѣ;
Донской блистаетъ здѣсь; тамъ Невскiй на Невѣ;
Цесарской перваго короною вѣнчанна;
Къ дѣламъ великимъ огнь внушаютъ во сердца;

Съ священнымъ ужасомъ вступилъ въ Господнiй храмъ;
И то сказать могла, что кроютъ небеса;
Россiю оправдать во предлежащей брани;
Молитву искренну читаетъ Богъ въ сердцахъ;

Ордынской гордости означился конецъ;
Разсѣется Орда, угаснетъ ихъ престолъ;

О Царь! сплетаются тебѣ вѣнцы лавровы;
Троянску отрасль въ немъ и Августову зрю;
Лучи вокругъ главы, въ рукахъ имѣетъ крестъ;
Жена прославилась правленьемъ и войною;
И дѣда Царскаго Адашевъ указуетъ;
Который внутрь и внѣ спокоилъ царствъ раздоръ;

Токъ слезный отъ стыда изъ глазъ его течетъ;
Благочестивый духъ Царя въ Казань ведетъ;
И Царь торжественно вступилъ въ свою столицу;
Во срѣтенье ему, казалось, рощи шли;
Въ долинахъ и лѣсахъ явилась оживленна;
Ликуетъ на холмахъ толпящiйся народъ;
И храмы пѣнiемъ наполнились святые;
Зритъ въ подданныхъ дѣтей, они въ Царѣ отца;

Натура вся тогда прiемлетъ смутный видъ;
Казалось,Iоаннъ вновь царство прiобрѣлъ;
Избранной Думѣ быть въ чертоги повелѣлъ;

Rossiada (First Song)

I sing of Russia from barbarians freed,
The overthrow of Tatar power and greed;
Old forces' movements, bloody war and woe,
Russia exalted and Kazan laid low;
How from such times evolved a calm wherein
A radiant dawn in Russia would begin.

O thou, above the stars, in soaring flight,
Poetic Spirit! from thy glorious height,
Come, to my feeblecrafted, dark creation
Offer thy rays of art's illumination!

Ope, O Eternity! those dwellings' gates
Where life has cast away all earthly weights,
Where righteous souls are honoured rightfully,
Where fame, where crowns, are deemed but vanity.
Before the altar strewn with stars stands tall,
Right by the highest king, the lowest thrall.
The poor and sore forget their misery,
Each with each other shares equality.
Empower me with my humble lyre's stirred strings
To rouse the heed of nations and their kings.
The veil is lifted! and before one's eyes
The ages' heroes crowned with radiance rise.
From them Kazan's bloodtainted moon is left
Swallowed in dusk, of glory all bereft.
O ye who jubilate in heavenly places!
Assume your forms and show your former faces.

The haughty Horde's Transvolgan force yet pressed
And durst old Russia's eastern part molest.
Our prisoners' fetters restlessly were ringing;
Mutinies seethed, new villainies were springing.
Pale fear through towns and cities stretched in throes
Evil soared after evil, woes trailed woes.
The altar lacked its smoke; the singer's joys
Died out, as storms alone were left a voice.
The plough afield neath thorns was left unstirred
The pastor in dark woods fled from his herd.
Day's heavenly luminary turning 'round
To the north, moaning, suffering Russia found.
Kazan, in her embraces born, demanded
A shameful tribute whilst she stood weakhanded;
Built in the north through Russian enemies' might,
This city, on the haughty mountain height,
Lifting its head, along two rivers stands,
Casting on roaring Volga's banks its glance;
Amidst the forest shade and varied flowers,
With northern gates supplied by Batu's powers,
Through which he pierces Russia's heart with raids
Villages sacks and cities sets ablaze.
From the peaks then such death and fires beheld
There, where the ancient Russian Bulgars dwelt,
Full of belief in laws held as their own,
Kazan, in depths of muslim darkness thrown,
Weeped at the blue-hued smoke, the burning lands,
Through Russia's fields extended urgent hands,
And from the princes asked for aid and light
When evil stretched its darkness far and wide.
By natural pity moved the princes then,
By the woes and the pain of kindred men,
Breaking apart the North, in clashes, warring,
Suppressed the haughty horde - and blood was pouring.

The Russian Hercules launched their attack
But new-born Hydra's heads kept coming back;
With stingers hid in this or that strange part
The serpents pierced yet closer to the heart.
The dragon-head lay crushed, but not the spite
That lingered on in eagerness to fight
Beneath the ash the hidden fire oft flared
In times of Russians' suffering prepared
To raise the trampled horde back to its ways,
During tsar John the Second's early days.
This gloried grandson of a grandsire bold
Kazan had almost let slip from his hold.
With a soul burdened, his forces he durst steer,
In a doomed march to war the previous year,
When Boreas himself 'gainst Russians drew
And hid, with frosty wings, Kazan from view.
Wrapped in a stormy cloud's obscurity,
A horror manifesting monsterously,
In remote steppes, in forests howled and swelled
Twisted among the mountains, dashed, and felled.
The volgan waves were forced to overflow
And from cold lips came whirlwinds, frost and snow.
The heat of Russians' blood failed that endeavour,
But burned more hot the following year than ever.

Meanwhile the Tsar gone to the capital
Enjoyed a life far from the trumpet's call.
O thou, who liv'st in Heavenly peace, I pray
Forgive me, mighty Tsar, that I portray
In darkness thus the morning of thy days,
More loudly shall I mark their afternoon's bright rays!
Twas great to tame the storm and threat of war;
To end the spirtual suffering, great e'en more.

As Moscow set aside its sword to sleep,
The trembling moon through clouds durst only peep,
Hatred kept wakeful eyes and soon a threat
From Volga, spitefully in motion set.
The Horde destroys the peace, endarked with spite
Severs its fetters, rebels far and wide;
Like as in former times, now raised its head
Bore down on Russia and its anger spread.
This vicious giant through each Russian city
Brings murder, theft and violence void of pity.
A sword and ringing chain it cruelly wields,
Walls fall and ruin reaches woods and fields.
Sly Sumbeki's behest fulfillment knows.
In Kazan Russian blood in rivers flows.
In Christian homes by dagger Christians die
Suffering blood resounds up to the sky.
Such weeping, gloom, bereavements fill the lands
The homeland blames the rulers' idle hands.

Greed fastened to the chariot of gain
Sowed round the Russian capital grave pain.
The nobles, when they sought the common good,
Long with their pity in but silence stood.
Moscow, struck with external devestation
Seemed void, from inner grief, of consolation.

The truth was hidden from the Tsar a while,
Honour sore trampled on by greed and guile
That bearing looks of ardent care, at length
Entered and day from day amassed more strength.

Flattery in feigned beauty strutted there
Which in its native state, stripped down, laid bare,
Is dark as night, and shy, in fright ne'er slow,
Low midst the strong but haughty midst the low.
It lies there at the feet of earthly kings
An obstacle to serve them in all things.
It hides a natural gall in sugary layers
Draws youth to vanity and lack of cares.
The nobles strive for luxury and gain
To the state's shame, united in their pain
Turned into sturdy props of flattery
Removing innocence from royalty.
Truth, thus assailed by lies from every side
What didst thou and what couldst thou then but hide?

In those grieved times, some nobles still did stand
Who showed true love unto the fatherland.
They gave no heed to mirth and vanity
And wept to view such woes and misery.
By sacred law and duty, to the throne
They turned and durst before the monarch moan.
In vain, as vices trampled honesty,
They try to shield the tsar from flattery.
Round the king gathered nobles grey with years
And there a common woe spoke through their tears.
With gazes, hearts and heads all bending down
It seemed a cloud was stretching o'er the crown.
On their vexed brows the beams of virtue came
In which the tsar could read the lines of shame.
They say "In thee life's spirit has been sleeping"
The tsar however heeded not their weeping.

The royal city darkens, shadows spread
Like night upon the face of Moscow's lowered head.
Sadness in hearts takes root, complaints on lips,
Such misery her lovely places grips.
With lowered eyes and long dishelved hair
Depression through the town draws to despair
It beats its chest, pours out its tears in streams,
The squares and houses lack all joys, all dreams.
Woes fill the oaky wood and grassy vale
No throngs, no wedding songs, nor lively gale.
All wear the robe of grief from head to toe,
And fill God's temple with one voice of woe.
Moscow seemed like a mud-infested pool,
That lacking movement and no longer cool,
Grows dim and foul and poisonous, at length.
The people see no hope and feel no strength.
As if the fire of Etna, robbed of peace,
The woody hills and densely growing trees
Threw from its surface to the open skies,
In ardent rage the people stir and rise.
From but a spark a massive riot came
And through the squares and markets spread its flame.
Moscow beholds the ruinous rebels' blaze
Rising against the nobles' evil ways,
Who yet enraged the spirit to such harm
To plunder Russia, plunged in such a storm.
Two Glinsky princes as its victims bled,
One slain, the other saved through cunning fled.
A new storm thundering in a threatening call,
With dark revenge o'ercast the royal hall.
A restless power a striking thunder grips
Against truth's revelation from men's lips.
Partisans of amusement earned a prize,
But loyal voices were afraid to rise.

Russia reft of her former pulchritude
Seeing herself divided, destitute,
The capital diseased, by gloom obscured,
The borders riven by the haughty Horde,
Hiding in luxury the tottering throne,
Dvina, Dneiper, Volga and the Don
By strangers owned: her hovering fate in sight
To greet the coming of eternal night,
Raises her tearstained eyes to powers much higher,
Raises her shoulders to the heavenly sire,
Bending her knee to him, the Mightiest,
Opens her bosom, lets out her wounded breast,
With one hand showing Moscow stained with blood
The other, evil's all-surrounding flood,
Melts into weeping, by such sorrow stirred
It leaves scarce strength for th'utterance of a word.

In rainbow twilights, sitting o'er the stars
God thunders through the elemental wars,
To whom the solar light is but a shade
In whom all move, by whom all life is made;
Who casts impartially from Heav'n his view,
Pardons or penalizes, as is due.
The Tsar of flame and flood heard Russia's voice,
Saw the last moment of his offspring's joys,
In but an instant reckoned all her grief,
And wished t'extend a hand to bring relief.
At once the skies became more bright, more warm,
Lifegiving dew came running to her form,
Washed and restored her sorrowed breast and eyes,
Rendered to suffering Russia strength to rise.
A rosy twilight drest the mid of night,
Angels through crystal doors held Earth in sight,
Playing their lyres, whose heav'nly music rang,
And a great blessing crowning Russia sang.
Then to one of the righteous ones above
Who live within the rays of Heaven's pure love,
Among the imm'nent ones, a lordly face,
Indeed, an angel vocalizing praise,
Almighty spoke: "Forth to thine offspring go!
And let a light amidst his darkness glow.
Let John behold in thee his homeland's face,
In thee, the state of Russia in disgrace."

Now swifter than a ray, like Zephyr blowing,
Flying among the worlds, his course was going.
The Heavenly man came to the North, o'er where
A brilliant streak was lingering in the air.
Then, cloudclad, to the house of royalty,
He went, where John lay sleeping troubledly.
The halls, as he arrived, were cast in light
The city quaked, its flaws were hid from sight.
Before the tsar the holy shadow came
Appearing in the shape that was the same
As when he, leaving life and all its load,
Moaning flew up to Heaven's bright abode.
His lowered head upon his shoulders lay
His sadfaced eye cast but a faded ray
A swordpierced breast, blood dripping from his clothes;
The trembling shadow through the silence goes
Bringing the sleeping tsar a nightmare grim
And gliding near and near, addresses him:

"O Tsar, thou sleepest from all burdens free,
Content with mirth, but born for victory.
The crown, the fatherland thou hast forgot,
Labor hast loathed and pleasures loved a lot.
Thy crown lies in the lap of vanity
And loyalty is lost to flattery.
Thou seemest like a tiger in delight
Lying in flowers, while in heaven's height
We share a common pain and hear the tellings
That spread amidst thy servants' mountaindwellings.
"Thou art empowered to do anything"
The syllables of Flattery thus ring
"Thou art the servant of the fatherland"
Duty and honour bid thee understand;
But thou heedst not the voice of truth where pride
Not loyalties but godless falsehoods guide.
We princes, thy great grandsires, lower our eyes
And weep in our abodes of Paradise.
Though we were lifted up for timeless cheer,
Because of thee we feel such rage e'en here.
We moan for Russia and we moan for thee.
Wake up and understand our misery!
Think of this land, thyself and what's to gain;
Of those of us - not few - by evildoers slain."

The sky now opens to the sleeper's sight,
John sees his sorrowed sires outlined in light
Where they appeared, crowned by their royal blood,
And in their previous bod'ly aspect stood.
The breast of Oleg, pierced by Batu's sword
His brother, George, nearby with blood begored,
In heavy shackles tragic Theognost
Requests the Horde's defeat at any cost.
With lowered heads they groan in misery -
Those tortured by the hands of cruelty.
The law is overthrown and broken down,
Tears pour in currents, gloom is cast around.
The line of Russian princes seems no more.
The nobles weep, the people's souls are sore.
In depths of blood pale faces are portrayed
Of those whose lives fell neath the Horde's cold blade.
His kinsmen there, his grandsires there he sees
Their trials, ordeals, their heavy injuries.

And the shade spoke departing sorrily,
"These bring to God complaints regarding thee
The last one murdered by an evil hand,
I, Alexander, thy forefather stand,
A former Tversky prince, come from the skies
Of Heav'n, to wipe the slumber from thine eyes,
To shed upon thy mind illumination
To seek and find our fatherland's salvation.
Behold my wounds, mine eyes in sorrow drowned
An image of the homeland here is found,
See, from my limbs the streams of lifeblood flow,
Picture the towns and cities struck with woe,
Now the same sword that tore my flesh apart
By the same hand is thrust at Russia's heart.
Her blood is pouring as it ne'er has poured.
Almighty God, thy judge, is long ignored.
The servants' general suffering and moan
Ascend the heavens til they reach God's throne.
Not for the people's sins, but for their sorrow
To God thou shalt be answering tomorrow.
Awake thy sleeping mind and save these lands,
Thy people and thyself from evil hands.
Dare thou a shepherd and a hero be,
God's love and future praise shall follow thee.
Hasten, resound and strike as wills the Lord"
And thus the message ended at this word.

The halls with brilliant heavenly radiance glowed,
As he ascended back to Heaven's blest abode.
John no more sees him in the darkness now;
Fear grips him, sorrow hovers on his brow.
The dream is fled, the vision now is gone,
In the tsar's mind the image though lives on,
Nor lets him to soft rest return his head,
And so he rises from his sorrowed bed,
Wildly agaze at everything in sight,
E'en as a wand'rer in the steppe at night,
Who hears snakes' hisses doubling through the air,
But has no hope of refuge anywhere,
Knowing no way to turn, no saving light,
At every step expects the piercing bite,
So John, alarmed, alert, now recognized
The fraud of flattery in truth disguised,
He turned away from liars near and far,
And soon was friendless, the unhappy tsar!
In action soon he put his private thought:
Adashev to his presence bade be brought.

This man, so prudent, in his flowering years,
Seemed at the court a planet that appears
Descended from some unfamiliar source
And rarely seen among the burning stars.
The courtiers were opposed to him, it seemed,
Him outwardly annoyed, but inwardly esteemed.
Adashev loathed the tricks of Fortune's wheel,
And worldly splendor trod beneath his heel.
With greatness of the soul, not rank and fashion,
True honesty soared over every passion.
E'en as a rock amid the stormraged waves
Stands facing Boreas - all violence braves,
As surges beat it, e'er unceasingly,
Adashev thus withstood depravity.
He loved his land, drew from the world afar,
And calmly came to th' awe inspiring tsar.
What need is fear with virtue plain as day?
Flattery holding guard must needs turn 'way
Seeing within the court his truth appear,
Pale, bitten through by envy and by fear,
It tries all tricks it can, above or under,
Biding its time through sunshine, clouds and thunder.

He came, and with him, virtue true and keen,
As when an Angel in the dark is seen.
Having Adashev in his warm embrace,
The monarch speaks with him, shows tender grace,
Saying in tears "With thee mine heart is freed,
Mayst thou not be a Monarch's friend, indeed,
As in a desert, loyal to the throne"

Then speaking of the nightmare with a groan
And heavy gaze: "My God has humbled me
And filled my being with new energy.
I feel such shame for shunning good advice"
A righteous, tearful look shone in his eyes.
Adashev had such patriotic love
And wished to be of those who dwelt above.
Seeing the throne o'erwhelmed by flattery's art
He wailed for Russia with a heavy heart.
In awe he spoke "O tis a blessed vision
Believe me, sovereign, by Almighty given.
Hark thou the land, the helpless people's dread.
Bear the crown on thine heart, not on thine head.
What good are Tsars if they don't take command,
When altars are o'erthrown and violence grips the land.
Villainy keeps a vigil over all
Truth is oppressed and none can hear its call.
The tsar not by the mantle honour gains
The mantle gains it through the one who reigns.
Enough thou shamedst thyself and all this land;
But now the hour of glory is at hand.

The leader heeding all the truth thereof
Saw virtue coming down from skies above
E'en as the Angel, had appeared at night
To Israel, behaloed with pure light.
Adashev's face, the light around his head
"This is a loyal friend" distinctly said.
This in his features could the Tsar well read,
And asked for succour in his time of need:
"I need thine insight, thine advice, thy grace,
A tsar should seek a friend of virtuous ways.
Reveal the truth and all its ugly sight;
And from the crown and throne put shame to flight;
Drive 'way this shame, drive 'way it with advice,
A path lit by the light of being wise!"

Adashev feared that flattery and deceit
Might slyly yet the Monarch's sense mislead:
"To drive away temptations from our souls
We must depart these luxurybearing halls.
Seclusion in a peaceful, fitting place
Shall lead us to the light of Heavenly grace.
Wisdom e'er flees from flattery and pride
All worldly vanity casts far aside,
Not living with rude townsfolk, but among
The woods and caves, its light there growing strong.
Let's go where vainglory and guile are not,
A sacred dwelling far from troubled thought
Whence a clean spirit flies to Heaven-ward.
O, choose this dwelling for thyself, my lord.
The strength of Russia is not yet depleted
Nor the love of the fatherland defeated.
Gather advice and look for what is true
And counsels of deceptive men fordo.
Thou shalt be seeing glory's rising light.
We fain shall spill our blood for thee and fight.
All Russia and the world are beckoning thee
Leave vanity for glorious victory!"

There is a place constructed in these lands
By a brave sacred Monk's committed hands,
Whence saints to Heaven arose and left behind
Their bodies of an incorruptible kind;
That in reception of an eager prayer
Grant cures from ills, relief from grief and care.
Saint Sergei founded this abode, where he
In a small hut concealed great industry,
He glorified a heavenly livelihood
And raised an altar to threepersoned God.
Seeing the walls and temples' majesty
To civilize a desert, possibly,
Sanctified treasures were conveyed thereto,
Where souls appear, where zeal is shining through.
A hill stands there, a sacred water's stream
From stone by Sergei formed, reflects high Heaven's beam.
The sprawling trees hang o'er the hill, all roun'
The tree-tops to the temple-tops bend down.
The building sanctifies forever more
The pledge of glory from the days of yore.
Heroes are painted there, those who laid low
Whoever dared become our Russia's foe.
There Svyatoslav in dust and beads of sweat
Sits, weary, on the ground and eats dry bread.
A simple warrior he shall seem at once
Though deemed no less in worth than Atreus' sons.
Vladimir with his sword and palm in sight
With trophies, allembraced by rays of light.
Lo, the chimera at his feet lies tamed
So was he crowned with faith and nobly famed.
There Yaroslav in laurels, Doskoi glows,
Nevsky on Neva, the artistry thus shows.
The face of John the first is there renowned
The first of all, as tsar, e'er to be crowned.
The triumphs of the crown, the splendor from its start
Arouse a fire for glory in the heart.
Adashev to the Tsar thus made his case
To turn his way unto this glorious place.

Day's lamp was not yet hidden in the sea
When they came to th'abode of sanctity.
With virtue as his friend, the monarch's eyes
It seemed, beheld therein true paradise.
In glory God is seen existing there.
He thus advanced, filled with a godly terror.
He understood, the soul in Heaven, still
Out of a lasting body healed the ill
Performing miracles e'en to this day
And what the heavens above conceal could say.
Approaching Sergei, there he stood and prayed,
Against Kazan requested Heaven's aid:
"O sacred man, who aidedst Dmitry's sake,
The proud horn of the Tatar moon to break,
Help me as well, raise 'gainst Kazan my might
To honour Russia in the coming fight.
Our fatherland, O Sergei, lifts to thee,
This orison in desperate urgency."
Unvanishing, the prayer remains as smoke,
Like heaven stricken by a levin-stroke,
On rainbow-wings ascends the atmosphere,
And God right from the heart the honest prayer can hear.
It crosses through the skies and stars that glow
Brings bliss to angels, fear to Hell below.
God hears its thunder, Moscow's wide awake
And the Horde, feeling dread, begins to shake.

Now in the midst of these noteworthy hours
God weighed the futures of two earthly powers:
The Russian kingdom to the heavens rose
And the pride of the Horde came to its close.
But to the glorious victors and their state
So many obstacles yet lay in wait,
The Horde shall break in pieces - cease to reign,
But wreak in Russian lands no little pain.

God uttered then his sentence; rapturedly
The organ of high Heaven's secrecy
Who serves the altars shook with inspiration
The spiritual shepherd made a proclamation:
"O Tsar, a laurel crown is wove for thee
And a new crown and throne to come I see,
Many a kingdom thou shalt need to fight
Many a woe endure to reach thy glorious height.
"Be brave" the words were uttered "and be strong"
Resounding through the heavens like a song.
A calm came o'er the monarch there and then
And he was ready to turn back again.
Adashev fans within him glory's flames
And shows him there inscribed great princes' names.
"Rurik is here, thine ancestor, indeed,
He of both Trojan and Augustan seed,
Strengthening forces of the shaken state
Left his descendants glory as their fate.
Olga the wise, behold among the best,
Here she gave punishment to Ikoprest
Around her head a ring of radiance stands
The cross is carried in her faithful hands.
May northern lands be ruled so sacredly.
Famous for war and wisdom both was she.
Behold these are thy foresires, look at these,
Behold their glory, look and bend thy knees.
"Thy learning imitates the brush, no doubt"
The tsar's grandsire Adashev pointed out,
Who settled kingdoms's issues near and far,
A harsh glance, so it seemed, cast at the tsar
As if reproaching him for idle ways.

John blushes while he gazes at his face,
And weeps for shame. Adashev from his core
Utters "Tis time, now time to start a war"
This glory soars to ethereal spheres and cries:
"Prepare, O Russian power to thrive, to rise!"
Now the throne-city waits, with fain ado.
Almighty God inclines his eyes thereto.
The tsar returns in stately wise and lo,
Suddenly all begin to flower and flow,
Even the groves it seemed were greeting him
Bright, cheerful, for so long by hard times dim.
Lived once again, as waters from the sea
From the Red sea, in spurts set forth, set free.
The thronging people in the hills rejoice,
Moscow lifts high its golden peaks with poise.
Songs fill the sacred temples, and the tsar
Sees hearts rekindled round him near and far.
The tsar sees in the cit'zens children dear
And they in him a father to revere.
In faces joy, amusement shines in eyes,
The soul tastes tenderness, a sweet surprise.

When the tsar angered God by his disgrace
A troubled look o'ercame all nature's face,
But neath the crown when virtue radiates
Nature and all the nation jubilates.
It seems again the kingdom knows his call,
A chosen council's ordered in the hall.
The city hitherto in misery,
Looked like a city from a seige set free.
