Summer of Loving

In the Summer of 1967, the US Supreme Court heard the case of ‟Loving v. Virginia”, perhaps the greatest name for a court case ever.1

We can love who we love;
love is free.
We can live like we live;
be and let be.
We can finally trade ‟I do”s
with whoever we may choose.

It’s the Summer of Loving,
‟Loving v. Virginia”.
And people are people:
it ain’t what’s outside that matters,
it’s what’s in ya.

Richard and Mildred Loving came from Caroline County, Virginia, where their interracial marriage ran afoul of a state law called the ‟Racial Integraty Act” of 1924. ‟Act” was spelled with 3 ‟K”s for some reason.2
But in the Summer of 1967, the Supreme Court overturned their conviction, assuring us that never again would the government decide who can and cannot be joined in matrimonial bliss.

Black or white, brown or yellow, red or green,
walk in style down the aisle,
you know what I mean.
(He didn’t mean green) Yes I did.
Find a white dress or a tux,
it ain’t nobody’s business who a person marries.

It’s the Summer of Loving,
‟Loving v. Virginia”.
And people are people:
it ain’t what’s outside that matters,
it’s what’s in ya.

Hey, people, it’s 1967, can you dig it?
Uncle Sa-ee-a-ee-a-ee-a-ee-am ain’t no bigot no more.
And Strom Thurmond’s reconciled
with the mother of his child.3

[And in November of 2008, the voters of California and the Mormon Church outlawed same-sex marriage in that state, and soon that case, or a case like it, will reach the Supreme Court too, but, you know: gay men could always get married - it’s just… their wives didn’t think much of it.]
And in November of 2008, the voters of California and the Mormon Church outlawed same-sex marriage in that state.
That was the Proposition 8, overturned very reasonably by a Federal Court of Appeal. And a case that’s almost certain to go all the way to the Supreme Court too, but, you know: gay men could always get married - it’s just… their wives didn’t think much of it.4

We can love who we love
till death do us ’part,
’cause no State can legislate
the human heart.
Fear and prejudice are gone forever,
[or till 2009, whichever comes first.]
or till 2012, whichever comes first.

It’s the Summer of Loving,
‟Loving v. Virginia”.
And people are people:
it ain’t what’s outside that matters.

Summer of Loving

Possiamo amare chi amiamo;
l’amore è libero.
Possiamo vivere come viviamo;
vivi e lascia vivere.
Possiamo finalmente scambiarci i ‟Lo voglio”
con chiunque scegliamo.

È la Summer of Loving,
‟Loving contro Virginia”.

Nero o bianco, marrone o giallo, rosso o verde,
cammina elegante lungo la navata,
sapete cosa intendo.

È la Summer of Loving,
‟Loving contro Virginia”.

Possiamo amare chi amiamo

    La canzone gioca tra il cognome Loving dei coniugi coinvolti nel caso e il fenomeno del 1967 chiamato Summer of Love {Estate dell’Amore}, in cui molti giovani, soprattutto a San Francisco, portarono avanti una rivoluzione culturale all’insegna dell’amore e della tolleranza.
    Il commento del cantante gioca anche su:
    love = amore
    loving = (atto di) amare
    Virginia = stato degli USA
    virgin = vergine
    trasformando il caso “Loving contro Virginia” in ‟fare l’amore contro verginità”.
  • 2. Riferimento all’organizzazione razzista Ku Klux Klan (KKK).
  • 3. L’originale suggerisce però la rima ‟it aint’t nobody’s business who a person fucks”. {non sono affari di nessuno chi si scopa una persona}
  • 6. Referendum della California Proposition 8.
    Vedi anche il caso ‟Obergefell v. Hodges” del 2015.
