Y'a tant d'amour

Adieu musique, adieu beaux jours.
Adieu caresses, adieu guinguette,

There's So Much Love

You shouldn't make fun of these tunes
that, in the streets and in neighborhoods,
will soothe lovesick and
hurting hearts.
They're told better than a poem
more kindly and nonchalantly
Remember, to say "I love you",
I made you a song.

There's so much love all over the world,
Give me your hand.
The time for loving scarcely lasts,
Why tomorrow?
In their small bedroom, Pierrot, Pierrette1
are losing their minds and are happy.
There's so much love all over the world,
Let's act like them.

You shouldn't make fun of little songs
where the sun and the lilacs
meet up in a tavern,
We can dance to those tunes.
So come waltz, one against the other
And softly into your neck,
this song that is ours,
I'll say it just for us.

There's so much love all over the world,
for those who want it.
The time for loving scarcely lasts,
Let's be happy!
In their small bedroom, Pierrot, Pierrette
are losing their minds, let's act like them.
There's so much love all over the world,
and in your eyes.

You shouldn't make fun of these tunes
that last longer than lovers.
Ah does my heart hurt so,
Farewell music, farewell glory days,
Farewell touches, farewell tavern,
But the lovers who will follow us,
to the song that I made
will go to the dance and love each other.

There's so much love all over the world,
Give me your hand.
The time for loving scarcely lasts,
Why tomorrow?
My God is it stupid,
I'm losing my mind:
I don't know the song anymore!
There is so much love all over the world...
The time for loving scarcely lasts...
No, no, I don't know anymore.

  • 1. Pierrot is a stock character of pantomime and commedia dell'arte whose origins are in the late seventeenth-century Italian troupe of players performing in Paris and known as the Comédie-Italienne. His character in contemporary popular culture—in poetry, fiction, and the visual arts, as well as works for the stage, screen, and concert hall—is that of the sad clown, often pining for love of Columbine, who usually breaks his heart and leaves him for Harlequin. Pierrette, I think, is the female equivalent. And, I don't know if this is related, there is also a 1924 film called "Pierrot et Pierrette", about a brother and sister who live in a caravan with their grandfather, the former ringmaster of a circus.
