Snake

Look, every woman ought to have snake within;
Look, every woman ought to have family;
This is bigger than you, this is bigger than me.

Look, every woman ought to have family;
Look, every woman ought to have family;
Look, every woman ought to have snake within;
This is bigger than you, this is bigger than me.

See, every woman ought to have snake within...

I'm sorry, St.Sol, but "ought to" can't be used in such type of sentence.

Oh, dear, I have dealt with many a snake and I know what I am talking about.

The masculine form is used to underline the fact that it is not just a snake, but it is Satan himself that manifests himself.

Haha. Where did you get "snake within" from? Here is "у каждой" rather than "в каждой". Yo can be assured critique is fro women...lol.
but I do not see a problem with "ought"

Lol. If you think that BG is discussing women having household pets, I am afraid you are mistaken :)

Lol. I'm sending this to the few friends I have just to hear male/female reactions. Anticipating snickers/hisses...

Well, this is rather ambiguous song for sure. Every reaction is welcome :)

And I really want to know who liked your explanation to me? I was just curious how you two would prove this? Just a rhetorical question... I know, from personal experience...

IgeethecatIgeethecat    петък, 31/08/2018 - 15:25

I 'Liked' it. As a matter of fact, I was typing similar answer to you, but St. was faster. And to prove what? I think it is obvious - we don't want a snake pet, we should have a snake inside us :D

You are killing me - you are expected to hiss...lol
We'd better stop before we have to remove all unnecessary contributions.

Having been born in the year of the Snake, I can see this from both sides.

IgeethecatIgeethecat    петък, 31/08/2018 - 15:47

My husband was born in the year of the Snake, so I am kinda in the same situations LOL

I am sure all the puns and undecipherable pronunciations in this song are a deliberate author's plot :)

An apple was introduced by змий, I guess, foreigners don’t understand the difference

St. SolSt. Sol

In Russian there is a big difference between "змея" (snake, feminine) and "змей" (the Serpent of the Bible, masculine). Too bad some editors refuse to admit the obvious and keep wallowing in their hubris.

Where is the editor’s integrity?

Where do you see or hear masculine form? If this another act to diminish women, then just say so. Because this what I hear from your message

Haha... What happened to "давайте дружно жить?"
Riddle me this: do 8 lines (generously counted without excluding duplicates) merit all these comments? lol.
I vote to give St. Sol the freedom of the interpretation and leave this topic be. There was no snake, there is no snake, but there are some awful women and men out there.

St. SolSt. Sol

You can clearly hear that he sings "мея" in some places and "мья" in others. I am quite confident these barely decipherable puns were intentional.

sandringsandring    неделя, 02/09/2018 - 11:55

There's a collocation of two consonants, the first one is voiced so it can't be "семья" anyway. Sorry. :) The verb here must be "must". It's a must. In The Taming of the Shrew Katherine speaks to her father about a similar situation concerning her sister.
"She is your treasure! She must have a husband. I must dance barefoot on her wedding day" (quoting from memory)

Ought to is always personal, it's addressed to a certain individual. In general advice only "should" may be used. Cheers! :)

St. SolSt. Sol

Let's agree to disagree. My statement about intentional unintelligible puns stands (whether it sounds collocated/voiced or not).
Regarding "must": in case you didn't notice I translated a categorical Russian statement as a personal advice: "Look, ..."
that was my choice, sorry if you didn't like it. There is academic and there is living language.

St. SolSt. Sol

Let me clarify: "as an ironical personal advice." If I may, the degree of implied irony here depends on the degree of one's self-identification with this song. I first heard it back in 1983 and even back then it struck me as a veiled pun on "змея-семья." I might be mistaken and there is nothing to it, but considering BG's art as a whole I find it highly unlikely. Regards.

The irony is in these abject remarks. If your objective was just to better the language used, it would have been appreciated (certainly, by me). Can you look at a translation and see beyond a particular word - otherwise, it sounds like the critique of the Impressionists when one could not see beyond the dots. Sorry, Hope ours, and I want you to know that I love your critique of my translations. St. Sol does not bother with my stuff - I can only surmise why. Lol.

Snakes are gentle creatures (if you don't tread on them), I had Scorpios in my life and those are deadly.

IgeethecatIgeethecat    неделя, 02/09/2018 - 16:25

Lucky me, I had Scorpions just as friends (male friends, female would be a disaster)

IgeethecatIgeethecat    събота, 15/09/2018 - 23:35

I hope you weren’t born in the year of snake? Otherwise, I should seek for the closest bunker. LOL

Lol. You know what they say: the road to hell is paved with good intentions... I am certain we all had good intentions. That said, all of you, please direct your critique to my translations as I want to better all languages I poorly speak.
And to another St.'s point, no more smart-mouthed remarks...

Sr. SermásSr. Sermás

Lol, it was much worse. I got confused and called it Red eyes... Lol. Meant Black....
