Yellow Calendars

Do you know a seashore
without the murmur of waves?
Do you know a river’s current
that doesn’t flow along?
Do you know? If not,
why do you want to stop
river’s currents, the murmur of waves,
your tears, my crying?

Regret won’t be of any help,
nor will your tears and my crying.
Nobody will hush the sea,
nor will they stop the rush of waves.

Do you know a wind
that keeps still all the time?
Do you know a night
which has no bottom?
Do you know a day
that doesn’t end with twilight?
When sleep is about to come,
I hear your voice again:

"Come back to the land of dreams,
where there’s an eternal spring.
Burn the yellow calendars;
burn the yellow calendars"1.

  • 1. The syntax in Polish is rather flexible. For this reason, in the two last lines of the original lyrics the meaning is the same in spite of the fact that in the first of the two lines the order is verb + adjective + noun and in the second one it's adjective + noun + verb

Thank you Agnieszka! I wondered, by "yellow calendars", does he mean old, yellowed, withered calendars ?

I suppose the intended meaning could be this, but it’s not sure. Anyway, “żółty” is „yellow”; „old” or „withered” or, even more precisely, „yellowed”, would be „pożółkły” (a piece of paper or a piece of cloth).
