C'était le bon temps

C'était le bon temps
On avait vingt ans
Et tous les dimanches
On allait content
Au petit vin blanc
Valser sur les planches

C'était le bon temps
Disaient nos parents
On le chante aussi
Mais c'est toujours comme ça
Jamais on oubliera
La musique à papa

Une chanson d’amour
Un jardin d’autrefois
Revoilà les beaux jours
Comme du cinéma

C’était le bon temps
Le monde était grand
Et belle la France
Il y avait des lilas
Des airs de java
Et d’autres romances

C’était le bon temps
Disaient nos parents
On le chante aussi
Mais c’est toujours comme çà
Jamais on oubliera
La musique à papa

C'était le bon temps
On avait vingt ans
Et tous les dimanches
Vas-y musette !
On allait content
Au petit vin blanc
Valser sur les planches
Vas-y musette !

C'était le bon temps
Ils avaient pourtant
Aussi des soucis
Mais c'est toujours comme ça
Jamais on oubliera
La musique à papa

Mais c'est toujours comme ça
Jamais on oubliera
La musique à papa ...

It was a good time

It was a good time
we were 20 years old
and every Sunday
we went gladly
to waltz on the boards
at the little wine bar.

It was a good time
our parents said,
we sing it too
but it's always like that,
we'll never forget
dad's music.

A love song,
a garden from before,
here again are the good days,
as in the film1

It was a good time,
the world was big,
and France was beautiful.
There were lilacs,
java waltz tunes,
and other ballads.

It was a good time
our parents said,
we sing it too
but it's always like that,
we'll never forget
Dad's music.

It was a good time
we were 20 years old
and every Sunday
Come on acccordionist!
we went gladly
to waltz on the boards
at the little wine-bar,
Come on acccordionist!

It was the good time
but they still had
some worries too.
But it's always like that,
we'll never forget
Dad's music.

But it's always like that,
we'll never forget
Dad's music ...

  • 1. for some reason I thingk this refers to home-made film made by Mama when the family went to dance at the winebar - Papa couldn't film it at the same time as playing his accordeon

Thank you, dear Tom.
I am pleased you like this song.
Any comparison with me will give you the master of the English language.
However, I can see some bugs in your translation:

C'était le bon temps > It was (a) the good time
On le chante aussi > we (say) sing it too
Et belle la France > and (frace) France was beautiful
(Ir was a) It was the good time
Ils avaient pourtant > but (the) they still had

Best regards

The song title is a good example of how French is unlike English, Scots, and Scots Gaelic in respect of articles and counts. I was sorely tempted to translate that line as "Those were the days" (which would have "the" as you suggest) but concluded that a translation to that very well known English phrase would be a mistake (a) because many people would claim the purals were wrong and (b) many other people would think it crazy to re-use an already famous song title (of course if this song had said "le temps des fleurs" instead of "le bon temps" I would have been absolutely unable to translate that phrase as anything but "those were the days".

I've fixed the assorted typos plus changed to "sing" (as you suggested) because the ambiguity of that line is much clearer like that than if made "say" to match "said" used in the previous line. And I'm wondering what to do about the title (and its six occurrences in the lyrics) - haven't made uo my mind yet.
