Jeune épouse

Ma jeune épouse,
pourquoi tes épaules sont-elles
semblables à celles d'une vieille femme ?
Celles d'une vieille femme fatiguée.

Ma jeune épouse,
pourquoi tes doigts sont-ils
semblables à ceux d'une haie en hiver ?
D'une haie en hiver.

Polonaise en hiver,
chaussures de neige et chasseurs
t'ont apporté les marchandises.

Ma jeune épouse,
pourquoi es-tu totalement immobile,

@Gavin @Igeethecat
"polonaise" can also be a dance or a Polish girl in French, but frankly both sound about as bonkers...

Gavin    শনি, 23/06/2018 - 22:48

Yes I figured maybe a dance. Not that either makes a lot of sense. I expect we're missing a key bit of info...
Octroyer - that's a new verb for me today!

Oh - and I spotted a typo. Unless you've already fixed it. Regular smile

petit élève    শনি, 23/06/2018 - 22:49

you mean the "celles" ?

Gavin    শনি, 23/06/2018 - 22:50

t'on apporté ..

t'ont apporté (e)?

I think?

petit élève    শনি, 23/06/2018 - 22:53

"t" (à toi) is an indirect complement. The direct complement is "les marchandise", the one the participle should agree with *if* it were located before the auxiliary. Really annoying rule, isn't it?

Gavin    শনি, 23/06/2018 - 23:00

Right, I wasn't sure about the agreement. But still it was the t'on that I spotted...

Shouldn't it be "t'ont apporté"?

petit élève    শনি, 23/06/2018 - 23:04

well yes, that's what I wrote : "[les] chaussures de neige et [les] chasseurs t'ont apporté la marchandise".
Doesn't mean anything to me, but that's gramatically correct. Or did I miss something?

Gavin    শনি, 23/06/2018 - 23:05

Maybe just a "t"?
Unless my eyes are playing up. It's been a long day... Wink smile

petit élève    শনি, 23/06/2018 - 23:07

Haha for some reason I couldn't spot it. Oh well...

Gavin    শনি, 23/06/2018 - 23:09

Phew - was beginning to doubt my senses! Regular smile

Gavin    শনি, 23/06/2018 - 23:21

I actually do see a kind of twisted logic in the COD/I thing even if I suspect it's mainly just a way to torture school children.
And I hate to say it but we've come this far - might as well fix the second missing 't' in the last verse too.

Uh - I really should go to sleep, been driving all day and not sure I'm firing on all cylinders anymore! Wink smile

petit élève    শনি, 23/06/2018 - 23:21

Erf.. I didn't take this translation seriously enough.

Gavin    শনি, 23/06/2018 - 23:25

Oh well - you know us Brits take T very seriously. Wink smile

petit élève    রবি, 24/06/2018 - 00:21

In doubt, just have a brew-up Regular smile

petit élève    শনি, 23/06/2018 - 22:57

"octroyer" is a bit lofty, but I thought it couldn't harm here Regular smile

Gavin    শনি, 23/06/2018 - 22:58

I guess 'grant' is rather grand too. Regular smile

Igeethecat    শনি, 23/06/2018 - 22:59

Oh, well, as much as I would love to put my (I raise it) 50 cents in, for some reason, in French, I only understand Okudzhava Regular smile

petit élève    শনি, 23/06/2018 - 23:01

well, I don't really understand this particular song to begin with, though the English is pretty straightforward.

Igeethecat    শনি, 23/06/2018 - 23:06

All I can tell you, is that he hates his ‘young bride’

petit élève    শনি, 23/06/2018 - 23:10

Indeed he doesn't seem to hold her in high esteem Regular smile
