We'd like to announce a long awaited feature - explicit content warning.

Songs with sensitive content can be marked as 'explicit'. All translations of such songs become explicit automatically.

When you visit a page with explicit content, warning pop-up appears. If you click "Always show explicit content" and press "No problem", pop-up won't appear on other marked pages, too. There's also "Allow explicit content" setting in the user profile.

"Mark as explicit" button appears at the bottom and can be used by those who are allowed to edit content (submitters, editors, moderators).

Your suggestions about improvements are welcome!

It surely will come in handy, thanks for adding!

Just a question, who will be able to mark and/or report lyrics as heavy? Only those who add them or anyone in general?

That's a timely move which has long been in the air, thank you. Tagging is much better than censoring or deleting lyrics.

I think we all should work out clear-cut definitions to prevent self-willed "just because" tagging. I believe that only mods and admins should be entitled to tagging but editors may report lyrics in need for tagging. If it's about obscene language editors may have to give a link to a dictionary entry marking a word/words as tabooed for common use.

I guess It would be simple to implement an automatic tagging, at least to the most popular languages on LT

Thank you Regular smile

Now I have a further reason to go through all the songs and translations I added:
Adding tags to translations, adding commentary to lyrics, and clicking on that shiny new button...

@Uncommon: You mean, by filtering for swear words?

@LT: We really need some rough guideline of what makes a song "explicit", though, because as much as I welcome this feature and have asked for it, I'm not sure how to decide what to mark with it and what not.

If I go by, anything that might offend people, then that would be 90% of my content I suspect. If that's the idea, I'll go ahead and do so (and most of them contain not a single swear word).
Or should we instead only tag lyrics when users ask us to do so?

Well yeah, it saves time for everyone. But user should have and option too.

I'm not sure explicit content and swear words are the same thing.
There is probably some overlap, but I see no reason to mark something as explicit just because it contains swear words.
Therefore I asked for some definition.

Hello folks, thanks a lot for the information and all your opinions!

Certainly every translator knows her/his stuff, and whether or not her/his works contain words that should not be read by children, or by people who get easily offended by profanity, for example. I would prefer the possibility for every translator to tag her/his works her/himself when she/he thinks it's necessary. Further I would also welcome that mods or editors could do that as well, if somebody calls out a legitimate complaint.

A definition would be essential in my opinion, fully agreeing with Sciera.

We advise all to rely on common sense and not to mark content as explicit based on single swearing words.

Please also check this guideline from Google https://support.google.com/googleplay/artists/answer/1728932?hl=en

And if you have concerns regarding a certain page, then it should not be marked as "explicit".

This version is the Explicit version of the song cause there exist 2 versions of the song and the Clean version aren't on here

The clean version video is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vcMHkvEVgVo

I don't really believe in the existence of common sense ^^
But those Google guidelines seem a fine starting point - I'll report back once I found them lacking at actual examples Tongue smile

In this case the only difference is in the clean version omitting words like fuck. As the admins confirmed, using such works doesn't make the difference between a song being explicit or not, it's about the actual topics covered in it.

If a clean version omits something that changes the whole interpretation, then that would make it reasonable to give it a separate entry.
I guess the following is explicit content in any case: https://lyricstranslate.com/fr/Eminem-Kim-lyrics.html
It describes a murder and thereby fits Google's guideline on violence.
But we actually have the clean version here, which omits parts of one line which is crucial to even understanding what a later part of the song is about.
You can find the uncut version and a transcription of that line here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z_6lgDFX6y0
EDIT: Changed the lyrics to the uncut version (and marked them as explicit) as all the translations do not censor that line.

That's a very good question - the song describes a sexual act, but whether it's "in a detailed way"... really borderline case. I could fully understand both points of view.
I would tend to mark it as explicit, considering that it's about a kind of sexual act minors are not very likely to have heard of before, but I'm unsure whether it would be explicit by the guidelines.

A similar case is this one: https://lyricstranslate.com/en/claudia-hat-nen-schäferhund-claudia-has-g...
A song about zoophilia, and I would therefore tend to mark it as explicit even more than the song above, even though it's even less explicit in its description, providing no details at all.

Certainly open to discussion.
