We're Going To Peace

"Article 3: No person shall be favoured
Or disfavoured because of sex, parentage, race, language,
Homeland and origin, faith or
Religious or political opinions or
Sexual orientation."1

I'm standing in front of you with my old dreams
Of love and peace and every person is free
If we stand up together, it could be true
The time has come - I ask: Do you take part?

We did not tear down the walls
Just so that they build new ones yet again
Come, let's run up the flags of peace now
We will no longer watch the war, standing on the sidelines

Come, we're going to peace2
We are more than you think
We are sleeping giants
But now we rise up

Just let them say we're dreamers
In the end we're gonna win
We don't let this world go down
Come, we're going to peace

"Article 1: All human beings are born free and equal
In dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and
Should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood."3

We’re all just sisters and brothers in blood
We’re a big human family
We don’t need no power-hungry idiots
With their bribes from the arms industry

I hear John Lennon sing: "give peace a chance"
And it sounds like a legacy from the universe
So that the world’s conscience awakens finally
For it’s five seconds before the big bang
But we are everywhere

Come, we're going to peace
We are more than you think
We are sleeping giants
But now we rise up

Just let them say we're dreamers
In the end we're gonna win
We don't let this world go down
Come, we're going to peace

Those wars everywhere
Nobody can win there
What if they started a peace
And everybody, everybody came.4

  • 1. The whole stanza is not literally translated but quoted from: Basic Law for the Federal Republic of Germany (see link below)
  • 2. The German song title "Wir ziehen in den Frieden" is a reference to "in den Krieg ziehen". Whereas the first is uncommon to German speakers, the latter means "to go to war". Udo Lindenberg (the author) has a very free understanding of using the German language, quite often he creates new words or phrases, perhaps just in order to rhyme or to express the opposite to a well known phrase, as is the case here. So the phrase "we're going to peace" is a new one, interpreting Lindenberg's new creation as exactly opposite to "we're going to war".
  • 3. The whole stanza is not literally translated but quoted from: Universal Declaration of Human Rights http://www.un.org/en/universal-declaration-human-rights/index.html
  • 4. The last two lines are not literally translated; the interpreter chose this form of translation because the German lyrics are a varied quoted slogan from the anti-war movement of the 1960s - 70s, which in German/English originally reads: Stell dir vor, es ist Krieg und keiner geht hin./What if we started a war and nobody came.
