Травы высокие, тонут в них лошади.
Сажею чёрною очи раскосые:
Тысячи конников, тысячи лучников,
Тысячи воинов, смерти обученных.
Белая крепость, белые стены.
Кровью хмельною — ярость по венам,
И, словно ласка, — ветер по коже,
Только уж больно на плети похоже.
Вольному воля, а пленному плаха.
Пуст мой карман, да порвалась рубаха.
И далеко, далеко до рассвета,
Но до конца ещё песня не спета.
Сломаны копья, и сломаны кости,
Кровью, как хмелем, пропитанный воздух.
Улицы встретят незваного гостя
Заупокойным молебном и тостом.
Сколько б ни бились — не знать примирения,
Словно забыли причину сражения.

Grasses are tall and thick, steeds drown in them en route.
Pairs of slanting eyes, dark as if drawn with soot:
Thousands of archers move, thousands of horsemen ride,
Thousands of warriors trained how to take a life.
There’s a white fortress — the walls of white rock.
Runs through the bloodstream the dizzying wrath.
And the wind’s light touch, caressing the skin —
Why does it feel so much like the lash’s sting?
To each their own, while the axe — for the captive.
My shirt is torn, and my pockets are empty.
The dawn seems to be such a long way away.
I’m hoping it won’t spell the end of my days.
Spears have been broken, bones have been broken,
That dizzying blood-scent the air is soaked in.
Dirges and doleful laments will now greet
An unexpected guest walking our streets.
However long they war — there is no peace in sight,
Like they’ve forgotten the reason for their fight.
A field’s left unharvested, laden with crops —
