Red sun over Hamburg

Red sun over Hamburg,
Grey sun over my heart
And my mind so heavy.
For, will I ever see again
The soft-outlined Elbe river?
I, the submariner, going away in a few days ?
Red sun over Hambourg
My heart feels a pang for
My children in the yard.
When will I see again, which day or which year,
My sun in Hamburg ?
I, the seafarer on departure in three days ?
The Hamburg skies are as red as my heart.

Evenings are broader in Hamburg,
And the sun is redder.
For river and sea reflect themselves in the towers,
Casting the light of the north sea
as far as the heart of Hamburg, that glitters all around
And seems to be set alight like a fire
running through the beaming evening up to the neighbourhood.
It sparkles, lives again, under the red clouds,
This old heart of Hamburg, it shines again, the old borough.

Twilight over Hamburg.
Some women shout, some children run,
Time to go back home, it's werwolf time.
Far away, for the farmer, it is the end of the ploughing.
Starlings pass and pass again in big masses over Hamburg.
It's a peaceful evening on Hamburg the red.

Black sun over my heart.
I must go back a while
To France for a few days.
Already, my heart is heavy,
Thinking of Hamburg,
And of its red suns.
The night begets a thousand reds....

O my heart O my heart, when the red sun goes down!
On the horizon, geese pass, chatting.
The sun goes down on the Elbe, the German country.
And, in Hamburg, skies and winds are always broader.
