These Endless Days

It feels as if there's something to say
I won't run anymore now as it's hurting
I learned my lesson all at once
Without ever discovering the reasons

Why does it have to be
A farewell which I can't understand

I gave up my body and my soul1
I fought the world to have you
I will let time solve what I couldn't understand
I will let time pass through these endless days

Why lie now if everything has finished
If your time came, then life returned to me
Why does it have to be
A farewell which I can't understand

I gave up my body and my soul
I fought the world to have you
Together with me you now have to understand
That I fought everyone to have you

I gave up my body and my soul
I fought the world to have you
Together with me you now have to understand
That I fought everyone to have you

  • 1. I think the literal translation is along the lines of "my being" but I liked the sound of "body and soul".

Hi, there! Thanks for this excellent translation. There are just a few things you should consider - here are my suggestions.

Já aprendi a lição de uma só vez > I learned the lesson all at once
Without discovering the reasons > Without ever discovering the reasons
I struggled against the world to have you > I don't think 'struggle' is a nice verb to be used in the context of a song and its translations. It's correct, but I would personally translate that line as 'I fought the world to have you'

'Porquê é que tem de ser' is actually an indirect question - it doesn't use a question mark because the rest of the question lies in the next verse. Those two lines then have to be translated as Why does it have to be / A farewell which I can't understand. However, the usage of that word is wrong - this tricky word has four different versions which convey different ideas and people must understand them from the context they're in. I'll correct the lyrics now.

And you got that 'my being' thing right. We generally use that to refer to our existence, but you can technically (and correctly) refer to your soul.

Congrats :)

Don't mention it!

It's a tricky word even for native Portuguese speakers - imagine how hard it is for foreign people... Some (me included) believe that at some moment in time all these four variations will turn into a single one that means all the four mean, but this is just a speculation. And this is one of the reasons people say Portuguese is the hardest language :P

Actually the expression is 'de uma vez só', but it can also be written 'de uma só vez' - it means the same thing: 'all at once'. 'Só' can mean different things, like 'only' and even 'alone'. ;)
