The First Time
1The first time ever I saw your face,
I thought the sun rose in your eyes.
And the moon and stars
Were the gift you gave
To the dark and the empty skies, my love,
To the dark and the empty skies.
The first time ever I kissed your mouth,
I felt the earth turn in my hand,
Like the trembling heart of a captive bird
That was there at my command, my love,
That was there at my command.
The first time ever I lay with you
And felt your heart beat2 close to mine,
I thought our joy would fill the earth
And last 'till the end of time, my love,
And last 'till the end of time.
The first time ever I saw your face,
I thought the sun rose in your eyes.
And the moon and stars
Were the gift you gave
To the dark and the empty skies, my love,
To the dark and the empty skies.
- 1. The song is labeled "The First Time" on the back of the CD and in the booklet of lyrics inside the jewel case. However, my research appears to reveal that the official complete name of the song is actually "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face."
- 2. I interpret this as the two words, a noun and a verb, not the single noun "heartbeat."

Über den Übersetzer
I created this transcription myself by listening to the song on the CD in my collection. Transcriptions I find online invariably contain errors and they completely lack punctuation. I end up spending the same amount of time, in the end, as I would if I just did it myself. So this time, I just did it myself.
.
The CD is from a German label named Bear Family Records, BCD 15576. Near as I can tell, the CD was released in 1991. It consists of both of Lightfoot's first two albums, "Lightfoot!" and "The Way I Feel," the former released in January 1966, the latter in early 1967, both of which vinyl records I still own, although I have no idea if they are even playable any more. This song is from the former album.

I'll say it over and over. Gordon Lightfoot is a national treasure in Canada. It is impossible to be a bigger star than he is. And that's been true for 50 or so years. He's pretty much on the same level as Maurice Richard.

This song has a twin.

Here's the link to his biography http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gordon_Lightfoot and the link to an article about the album http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lightfoot! (the exclamation point is part of the URL). Plus here's a link to an article about the song http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_First_Time_Ever_I_Saw_Your_Face. This article lists a stunningly long list of artists who have covered the song. I first encountered it in this version by Gord on this album in the late '60s. When Roberta Flack's version came out, I wondered why she was desecrating such a wonderful Lightfoot song. It was only years later I discovered even Gord's version was a cover. They are the only two versions I have ever heard and frankly, since I believe Gord's version is definitive (you'd expect no less of me), despite the fact it's a cover, I have no desire to hear any of the others. The names on the list of covers that I find noteworthy are José Carreras, Harry Belafonte with Lena Horne, and Edward Woodward (TV's Equalizer, a series that aired in the 1980s that I was rather partial to).
