La musica va [The Sound of Music]

La musica va,
per le valli in fiore,
e canta il mio cuor la parola amor.

La musica va,
attraverso il cielo,
e un angelo la canterà, per me.

Che suoni dolcissimi scendono di lassù
dall'immenso blu.
Il vento tra gli alberi soffierà
per cantarli a me.

Ed ogni ruscello li porterà nell'immenso mar.
E tutto sarà,
come un canto di felicità.
E sale lassù dalle valli in fiore,
la musica che porta via il mio cuor;
lo poeta laggiù verso gli orizzonti
che vorrei per me.

The music goes

The music goes,
by the valleys in bloom,
and my heart sings the word of love.

The music goes,
across the sky,
and an angel will sing it, for me.

What sweet sounds come down from up there
from the immense blue.
The wind in the trees will blow
to sing them to me.

And every brook will take them to the immense sea.
And everything will be,
like a song of happiness.
And go up there from the valleys in bloom,
the music that takes away my heart;
the poet down there on the horizon
I would like to wish for me.

Kommentare des Autors:

I was not sure if the line should be "to sing them to me" or "to sing to me".

This was such a pain to translate into English because the Italian lyrics did not match very well to the original English lyrics (probably because the Italian translators took out many of the similes and metaphors that the original English lyrics had used)

Personally, I'd say the music travels instead of goes but then again I'm still learning Italian.

The translation in the last four lines is kinda broken; I'm guessing this is due to the peculiar structure of the sentence and an unusual verb.

  1. E sale lassù dalle valli in fiore / la musica che porta via il mio cuor; → "And the music that takes my heart away goes up there from the valleys in bloom". In Italian, under certain circumstances, the subject may be placed after the verb, such as in this case.
  2. Lo poeta laggiù verso gli orizzonti / che vorrei per me.
    1. While it is true that the word poeta normally translates to "poet", in this case, it's a verb (meaning "to write/recite poetry"), due to the presence of the particle lo, which indicates an action to an already mentioned object. If poeta were used as a noun, the article preceding it would be il, not lo.

A more accurate, albeit less structurally consistent, translation would be "And the music that takes my heart away / goes up there from the valleys in bloom / and sings it down there, towards the horizons / I'd like for myself".
Alternatively, another translation, more faithful to the structure of the original lyrics, would be "And it goes up there from the valleys in bloom, / the music that takes my heart away / and sings it down there, towards the horizons / I'd like for myself".
