The Hundred-Year-Old Tree

Picturing the annual alumni dinner
So soon would I be meeting with you
To my surprise, I found my face blushing
So tender was I, like in the days of yore
Cruel is our reunion
Yet you appeared so polite and modest
It might have been ten years since our story ended
And there’s nothing much to worry about anymore

How can I put my most profuse nostalgia
Into practice for you?
Such is the debt of my naïve youth
That we never got together
Our paths of love diverging ever apart
Falling in love and breaking up with so many partners
Vicissitude pervades the air, like smoke coming from your cigarette

Interweaving our best years with beautiful languor
If I find myself helpless, I can only substitute it with newfound love
If I find myself in denial, it’s just that I’ve never been so anxious about a relationship ever since
Letting you go when I never even held you tight

When facing our own growth
We must struggle through the competition for happiness
Fifteen years from now
When the bright future you’ll be achieving
Will have managed to dissolve my sorrows
We’ll meet again amongst the crowd and exchange pleasantries
You should leave, as I should catch the train
Each of our routes in life
Calls at its own platforms

Can I borrow your smile from today and retake that photo of us?
Yet I find my memories unexpectedly contaminated, and the truth uncovered
Turns out that it’s only me who’s paying homage with a wry smile at this point
This entire joke has left me brilliantly stranded

Interweaving our best years with beautiful languor
If I find myself helpless, I can only substitute it with newfound love
If I find myself in denial, it’s just that I’ve never been so anxious about a relationship ever since
Letting you go when I never even held you tight

When facing our own growth
We must struggle through the competition for happiness
Twenty-five years from now
When the bright future you’ll be achieving
Will have managed to dissolve my sorrows
We’d meet again amongst the crowd and exchange pleasantries
You embrace me, but I’m slipping away
Taking what we need most from each other

As the shade of the tree overwatches the crowd
It's documenting all sorrows and joys, love and hate
Two hundred years from now
Moss would have outgrown everything
And the tomb shall witness the blossoming of flowers
Why am I bothering myself then, with this love that only lasted mere seconds?
I was bashful, and you were candid too
The love we shall never acquire –
Still amazing, even with its regrets
