I’m glad this collection exists. Armenian is such a pretty language and I’m always happy to find new music in Armenian

Armenian is my favourite language but there are no resources to learn it, aside from a short course on Memrise which I’ve already done. So I haven’t done much with it

Yes, i feel you. I've been told, and notcied myself, there is a huge lack of recources for Armenian. If you're really keen to learn I have some tips:

  1. The easiest tip, look at translations on here Regular smile Armenian is very good with english because it has a very almost 1-to-1 letter to letter translation. What i mean is unlike chinese (extreme example but will do) if you want to translate A its Ա, B is Բ, etc (i hope im clear on what i mean). So its easy to elarn the alphabet and the sounds of the letters in Armenian. Translations are a good way of that.
  2. Another way is to look on Youtube. ALthough rare, there are some videos that teach armenian basics and stuff.
  3. Go on this website: https://www.lexilogos.com/english/armenian_dictionary.htm and type words and learn them, compile into sentences, etc and keep a journal of words. This website is very good as a 2-way dictionary in my opinion.
  4. There are these apps you can learn by talking to people. A quick search on the app stores will show you some. Now, i dont use them really but they might have armenians on there to chat with.
  5. You could ask me questions in chat, when im on ill definetly answer you.
  6. If you have a macbook you can do the phonetic Armenian keyboard and that can make it easier to type Armenian letters: https://imgur.com/BHfONzz

My boyfriend is Greek and in 2 months he can already talk to my grandparents basics and sentences for basic convo. The way he did it is by learning the verbs and their conjugation and basic words and slowly combining it. Armenian is not a hard language, s i said the letter-to-letter transcribtion makes it easy for an english speaker to get the reading and alphabet in check early on. Unlike Chinese (my previous example) which characters stand for words and they sound different Armenian is pretty 1:1 which is great. If you check transations ive done i even find the translations rhyme in english as well sometimes which is pretty cool. Hope this helps.

Thank you! This is very helpful. I learned the alphabet on Memrise when I did the course there, but it taught Western Armenian, which I came to find out isn’t the most common variety so it made reading a bit difficult at times.

I will check these out and see if I can also get my hands on some books as well. Regular smile

Yes, try these tips, and if not, as i said, if there's words or sentences you need I can definitely help in chat. Also, watch shows if you want once you get the hang of the words. Other than music, there's this show I really like (i'm Eastern and most shows are Eastern because it's produced in the country) called Full House on ArmeniaTV. This first episode I linked is luckily subbed in English (there's 8 seasons of this show and it's very funny if you understand) actually so watch shows if you want as well.

Oh thank you! I’ll check out the show. I guess I should learn Eastern Armenian, haha.

LyricalMiracleLyricalMiracle    Κυρ, 10/03/2019 - 11:50

Well, if you know eastern it's easy to understand western. I know many western Armenians and they don't understand me as well as I do them. Hard and long to explain the reasons why but just trust me XD. Also, eastern will give you slightly more recourses like shows and music so I would suggest it.

It is really sad knowing such a beautiful language will become extinct by the end of this century 😢 😢😭

Zarina01Zarina01    Κυρ, 10/03/2019 - 05:04

What are you talking about?

LyricalMiracleLyricalMiracle    Κυρ, 10/03/2019 - 11:27

Arzu Turan Buddy what are you on about?? Is there a mass extinction you're aware of that we aren't? How will it be extinct? Also, languages are never extinct they only evolve. The amount of words that stem from Latin and Greek in English alone, for example, (not even mentioning other languages) is literally almost all of it. Almost no modern language today is the same as it was years, centuries ago unless you go to very isolated villages. It's almost impossible to keep a language the way it is forever. Look at Greek, they standardized their language and still today its a lot of slang and new words keep adding into it.

All jokes aside, I don't get what you mean... The diaspora will lose their connection to the country for sure (unless they actively learn and keep it alive). Also, Armenian diaspora (mostly western Armenians who fled the Genocide) ended up mixing heavily with Arabs, Persians, Greeks, Russian, Turks, etc... So they aren't even "fully" Armenian anyways. I'm fully Armenian from the country and even i'm not fully Armenian in ancestry (is there a 100% something ancestry anyways? No...). So please tell me what you mean. We are like 10-11 million in the world (not a lot but still significant).

Yes, of course we have a declining population. We are a small nation, the financial state of our country is absolute shit, and it's a hard nation to raise a family in unless you are wealthy so its understandable. But whether the language will go "extinct" like the word implies is a matter of time and demographic changes. I like these articles, thanks for linking them to me but there will always be, no matter how small, people who speak the language. We have the country and unless a war breaksout or something the language will keep being taught so someone will speak it inevitably. But, yes, our population needs to be dealt with. With political state improving recently (or so it seems) we can hope that it will happen before it's too late. This is not the language though its a question of socioeconomic problem in the country which makes it very hard to raise a family (trust me i know) and keep the population at a good amount of people.

Arzu TuranArzu Turan    Κυρ, 10/03/2019 - 12:41

There is a certain percentage of birth rate for small populations (I think 2.1 or so) in order to prevent population collapse. And what they say about Armenia is that she has been well below that for many decades now. So in order to avoid a total population collapse, you either have to start making lots and lots of babies very soon or just make peace with your neighboring countries, open up your borders and start marrying them to keep your nation alive and kicking. Inter-racial marriages aren't actually bad as some racist bigots think. Mixing with other peoples does actually make a nation stronger. Idea of A Big Strong Wealthy Happy AZERMANIA doesn't sound bad at all Teeth smile

Look i'm assuming you're not a troll and you genuinely mean well in your comment so continuing in that tone, agreed. Trust me im not one of the nationalist people from the country and we actually mix a lot in the diaspora, so thats not the problem. The problem really stems with the country itself, how its governed, the corruption etc. My idea has always been that Armenia should join with Russia as an autonomous region (like Dagestan for example) that way you keep identity but join a larger nation. I think this would solve a lot of our problems because these idiots in government ruin the whole country.
