Hello, I need help because I'm translating a french song in english and I don't know how to translate an expression.

In France, at school, when a pupil/student comes back after being missing he has to give a paper justifying his absence and signed by his parents, we call that "un mot d'absence". How do we call that in english ? An absence note ?

Thank you for your help Regular smile

The almost literal translation with "note of absence" would work just fine.

"Note of absence" is a bit too formal unless you're translating something old and it needs to have an archaic tone. We'd call it an absence note. Or, if it was due to being out sick, a sick note. Sick note also works if you were only pretending to be sick and the absence was for some other reason.
