Taurus Sign

We all are Centaurs, there's no doubt.1
Man lies within; parchment without.2
Ink ov’r one skin—there won’t be more;
Book-people of the world throughout
Wake into death, and so die out34
In diaries of their mundane chores.5

This means—the Minotaur bears
His labyrinth on his mortal spine.6
Take dead-ends by manhours applied;7
Tell of the offspring of your vine,8
When you are probed by the Divine,9
Show Taurus branded on your side.

  • 1. Prev version: "We all are Centaurs, all of us". Changed to swap to AABAAB rhyming scheme!
  • 2. Archaic meaning - without as in opposite of within.
  • 3. Prev. line: "Crumble and fall, and so die out"
  • 4. Perhaps "fade out" might work instead of "die out".
  • 5. Ha, bet "shores" can be shoved in somewhere here too...
  • 6. Trying to preserve the (probably absolutely unintended, sorry PZ) wordplay with "тавр" also meaning "хребет"...and since "тавро" is brand/claim, perhaps that would at least justify the 'branded' in the last line?
  • 7. Implies multiplication; "take a by b", "four-by-four" (4x4).
  • 8. Wah I aimed for a metaphorical fruit-of-the-vine reference but I think I got carried away and combined the two.
  • 9. Considering "When you are judged by the Divine" instead. It would be further from original literal meaning, but perhaps closer to its intent?

Didn't manage ABCABC, sadly)) Interesting, I wonder if there's a way to integrate the sleeping/waking thing instead...hmm. I'll try to think of something! I changed the last line, do you think it works a bit better? ^^

Edit: Changed title, I wonder if this was a pun you intended... :^) As for the sleeping line, how about smth like "Wake into death, and so die out"? That's the first thing my brain spits out, but I'm sure there is something better. Also wondering if it's obvious enough that the last line of stanza 1 is "дневниками" and not "в дневниках" (both "in diaries") or if it needs tweaking ‎🤔 "As diaries", perhaps, instead of "In diaries"...

Hmm I think AABAAB might be possible in the first stanza with something like this??

We all are Centaurs, there’s no doubt.
Man lies within; parchment without.
Ink ov’r one skin—there won’t be more;
Book-people of the world throughout
Wake into death, and so die out
As diaries of their mundane chores.

Not sure about stanza 2, though, might have to change the rhyme of the "vine" line instead and possibly try to shove in wordplay with "litter" (="приплод")

I feel like you overestimate me here)) Old work has a lot of merit in it, doesn't it? I feel like a lot of writers feel strange looking back on past works (me included, though I think it's unlikely I'll post poetry anytime soon), but it does hold some charm...smth smth "snapshot" of your creative process at some point in the past. Quite like amber, any bugs you see included. As for the diaries thing, would "chronicles" be a more appropriate translation then? 🤔 Or something along those lines..."In chronicles of mundane chores", maybe.

Also wondering what you think of the other changes! I left new footnotes on everything, but am still largely unsure. Also, whoa, this makes this work older than I am...

PinchusPinchus    Τρί, 18/02/2020 - 17:51

>I feel like you overestimate me here)
>As for the diaries thing, would "chronicles" be a more appropriate translation then?

Perhaps you should also your own advice and give more credit to your English skills) Though that's an interesting thing to point out, I feel largely the same about poetry even from two years back. Can't really imagine how I'd feel looking back on it with decades of change...I'd probably cringe but every step on the road must be taken to progress along it :^)
As for poetry, it's in English! I don't think I ever wrote much in Russian, though I did read a lot in it. I'm not comfortable enough in the language anymore to attempt any kind of writing in it, since it requires a different skillset from simply translating from it, but perhaps with how things are going I might give it a try one day too for experience's sake. The feedback part is absolutely true, but then there's the "mortifying ordeal of being known" and all...
Changed it to chronicles anyway until something better comes, btw, since I think the contrast between the tone you mentioned and "mundane chores" is kind of fun. Still hunting for another word, though.

>mortifying ordeal of being known
>chronicles

Wah, the prospects of the future...I do hope I end up somewhere worth ending up, at least. As for the 'mortifying ordeal of being known' part, I actually mostly meant the general insecurity of sharing one's work with other people ^^ I'm not particularly afraid of it revealing anything about me, but subjecting myself to criticism and providing something concrete for other people to judge is a scary thing. I suppose it's something I need to overcome in this area too at some point ^^
"Открой сокровенное и сокрой откровенное." that's...impressively deep...Thank you for your advice, I'll ponder it as it deserves)

And then you may find yourself on the shores of the stream of consciousness that flows like diarrhoea feeding into the diaries...

This is completely unrelated but any time I read your username I always interpret it as English, it's a curse...
🤔 I hope the afterlife proposed by PZ in this scenario has a good plumbing system...not sure what the shores might have in store. Gives a whole new meaning to "be an open book", though, eh?

wisigothwisigoth    Τετ, 19/02/2020 - 14:38

wisigothwisigoth    Τετ, 19/02/2020 - 15:29

   Τετ, 19/02/2020 - 15:36

Perhaps it's different for everyone, but are those things really mutually exclusive?) I took it as a kind of "we change, but we remain ourselves" sentiment...perhaps a way to interpret it is, a tree that grows for a decade is essentially still the same tree? Apple won't become orange and all that.

wisigothwisigoth    Τετ, 19/02/2020 - 16:13

Same tree, agreed. Still, Mr PZ said: it wasn't me who wrote it (re: а poem from youthful era)

PinchusPinchus    Τετ, 19/02/2020 - 15:57

wisigothwisigoth    Τετ, 19/02/2020 - 16:14

(с) lol

PZ! Sorry to harp on the same old translation again, but I just had a thought - how about "In outlines of their mundane chores" for last line of s1? Has the advantage of not having that too-grand tone you mentioned, and also may or may not vaguely reference the "shores" mentioned in the original (since "outline of the island/continent/whatever" can basically be used to mean its edges, aka shores)...and "outline" by itself captures the dual implication of "summary" and "notes" better. It's also more explicit on the idea that said 'diaries'' are merely a representation, not at all equivalent to the real thing (aka, life experience). Thoughts?

Then again, I might as well just go back to "diaries" again...seems to do all this while also being truer to original :^(

PinchusPinchus    Τετ, 19/02/2020 - 14:22
