It was announced some years ago by LT that they would not add any new music genre. This is because the genre category was becoming so messy with a million sub-genres and sub-sub-genres, so it was decided to keep the most basic ones.

Anerneq, Okay, if you are only leaving the most basic ones, which of all the genres that are currently added includes the ballad genre?

"Pop" or "Indie" I guess? I'm not really sure, I don't use genre categories too much.
The genres are used to describe artists, rather than songs, so you should base yourself on what kind of music they produce as a whole. There are also the "singer-songwriter" and "alternative" categories which might fit in some cases.

When I use "Pop" I always relate it to a more energetic sound, and I don't know what the genre "Indie" means and about "singer-songwriter" I always relate it to the singer making his own songs, not to a type of rhythm, and I don't know what the "alternative" genre means either :/

Ballads can be pop-y and energetic in some cases. Also, as I said, if an artist has always sung pop and suddenly sings a single slow ballad, they're still a pop artist. "Pop" means "popular" and if we stick by this definition, many ballads could be considered pop.

"Indie" stands for "independent". It doesn't have a distinctive sound. Just like "singer-songwriter", it describes the way songs are produced, that is by independent artist not affiliated with any major record label.

As for "alternative", I'd probably describe it as "anti-pop". If pop is considered mainstream and commercial, alternative is the complete opposite. It's a genre usually associated with specific music cultures (such as the underground culture). It's also related to "indie" sometimes.

It would be nice to have some sort of guideline from LT, just to be on the safe side in case of doubt.

If you are right, although there are also artists that most of their songs are ballads., thank you very much for the explanation

I wonder if you can call "ballads" a genre at all.
There is almost nobody who sings mainly or exclusively ballads,
maybe except for Bob Dylan and Joan Baez.
Most countries have their own though. (Germany: Hannes Wader, Franz Josef Degenhardt),
but it's okay to me to label them as "Singer/Songwriters".

There is a genre "entehno" on the list, which is probably a misspelling of "ethno" .
That should be corrected.
(I remember it spelled correctly before, though)

I wonder what "Latino" stands for.

On the other hand I really deplore it if it's true that

There are really important and distinctive genres missing,
like "Schlager" and "Chanson".
If they show "Flamenco" they are supposed to show "Schlager" aswell, and "Volksmusik".
"Schlager" is a kind of specific German language Chanson and a huge genre in German speaking countries.
"Volksmusik" artists are mostly labeled as "Pop-Folk" which it is clearly not.
It includes what they would call "Oom Pa Pa"-music to a specific traditional-German sounding type of chanson, oftenly coming in a type of Bavarian/Austrian dialect.

It is odd that a chasonnier like Charles Aznavour has to be labeled as "Singer/Songwriter" and Mireille Mathieu and Frank Sinatra as a "Pop"-singers.

Generally the offered options for "Genre" are too much centered around American and Britsh culture.
There must be more way ceeded for international local country genres other than those.

Hansi K_Lauer, entehno is some type of Greek music.

Perhaps a genre like austropop could be removed and a more needed genre could be added? Austropop is pop music from Austria, so it's a very specific genre and it was agreed that kpop, jpop etc. shouldn't be added either. Then again, it's difficult to come to agreement about what should and what shouldn't be added, so perhaps the admins aren't going to update the list anytime soon.

That would be great if it was possible.
I would suggest to replace it by "Schlager".
That's really needed.

There are like 15 of them that could be removed. They have some obscure ones there. It's a giant failing of the site. Also that once the singer/band is uploaded the genre is set. I've seen the weirdest genres on artists that are unrelated to their genre. (like Opera on a pop-rock singer).

I'd like to add Calypso, it's certainly a genuine genre of music, though admittedly not the most popular on this site: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calypso_music

If there's a wrong genre on an artist page, it's always possible to remove it. If you can't do it yourself, please let us know.

I checked the current genre list, and the following genres aren't used much:
Austropop (27 artists)
Grindcore (35 artists)
Holiday music (30 artists)
Psychobilly (16 artists)

The rest should have at least 100 artists. Some of the genres might also be pretty close to each other, so perhaps, for example, "Christian rock" artists could simply be marked as "rock" + "religious"?

That would be awesome should I do it here or in the other place? the link is: https://lyricstranslate.com/en/natan-goshen-lyrics.html it's opera that should be removed.

This needs to stay, otherwise we can't categorise those Christmas carols and other festivity-related songs.

I would think IMHO that it would be unfair, because there are multiple other religious music categories. to lump them all into religious would be bad, there should be more subgenres than just Christian rock and Nasheed (Muslim prayer music) - which goes back to the initial issue... Other religions have their own religious music and it just singles out those two. A lot of the "religious" genre - if you take out the ones that really should be in Christian music (rather than rock) are Orthodox (Jewish) music. There is no category for that.

You could just have a Christian music genre and put holiday specific music in a collection. wait it's already in one https://lyricstranslate.com/en/christmas-carols-lyrics.html - Jewish music doesn't even have any genre like Christian music does.

I removed "opera". If you come across any other wrongly added genres, you can report them in "Reporting mistakes" like other stuff.

But good points, OgingerO and Anerneq. It isn't easy to find a good solution if we can't just add new genres.
