Drão*

Drão!
Our love is like a grain
A seed made of illusion
That must die to sprout
To plant in some place
To give back life in the earth
To our sowings
Who could kill such a love?
The ways of our walkabouts*
A hard journey
through the dark night

Drão!
Don't think about our separation
Don't tear up your heart
True love is an empty space
It extends into infinity
An immense monolith
The architecture of us
The ways of our walkabouts
A tatami bed
For as long as life lasts

Drão!
The kids are all healthy
The sins are all my mine
God knows I have confessed
There's nothing left to pardon
And that is why compassion must reign
Who could kill
Such a love
If our love is a seed
Then it dies, and is born as wheat
It lives, and dies as bread
Drão!
Drão!

*Gilberto Gil's third wife's name was Sandra, nicknamed "Sandrão" or "Drão" ("Big Sandra")

*This is a neologism/word play that is difficult to translate. Andadura in Portuguese means "gait" or "trot" (in an animal).
Caminhadura is a noun based off the verb "caminhar" (to walk) which is more or less synonymous with the verb "andar." In addition the word caminhadura sounds like "caminha dura" or "hard little bad," a reference to the tatami bed that the couple slept on.

For the English translation, the verse "Pela vida afora" is really meaning "For as long as life lasts"... the original sounds for me like "For the outside life".
