La morale dei briganti

Per entrare nella storia,
nella labile memoria
dei futuri cittadini,
spesso servono i quattrini,
non importa come fatti,
se per meriti o misfatti,
l’importante è accumulare
un patrimonio immobiliare
che ti renda anche potente
agl’occhi della gente,
perché se non ti fai grande
ti ritengono un brigante.
E è su questo che io rifletto,
dopo aver letto e riletto
la richiesta di Berardo
fatta a un nobile boiardo;
e mi pongo il dubbio arcano
che assillò il genere umano:
la morale è una sola
o ha ragione anche Berardo Viola?

E voi di certo non sapete
di quando chiese cento monete
ad un ricco e gran signore
perché vide il suo garzone
che allungava la mano
a rubare il biondo grano
e di nascosto caricare
quattro sacchi dal casale.
Giudicando questo fatto
un gravissimo misfatto,
la sua acuta intelligenza
ruppe ogni reticenza,
e Berardo, il reo brigante,
ebbe un lampo fulminante,
e disse:
«Ma se ruba anche il garzone
già pagato dal padrone,
sarà legge, o no, perdio,
che gli rubi pure io,
prima d’esser fucilato
come un uomo disperato?»
Io non credo sia mai andato a scuola,
ma è scaltrissimo, Berardo Viola.

Ma il quesito è illuminante,
proprio di chi ne sa tante;
e rispondo ‹Sì, Berardo,
hai ragione, ma in ritardo;
perché il ricco, se potente,
è persona intelligente,
ma se non diventa grande
è un terribile brigante.›
Stabilire ciò che è male
è un’impresa colossale,
quando c’è chi pranza e cena
e chi ha il pane a malapena.
Chiedo a voi gran professori,
ai giuristi e a voi signori:
la morale è una sola
o ha ragione anche Berardo Viola?

La risposta, ascoltatori,
farà sudare molti dottori
della legge, moralisti
e anche noi poveri cristi.
Io mi affido alla coscienza
e alla vostra intelligenza.

The Morals of Bandits

To make history,
to enter the fleeting memory
of future citizens,
you often need dough,
it doesn’t matter how you made it,
whether by merit or mischief,
the important thing is to accumulate
real estate assets
which make you also powerful
in the eyes of people,
because if you don’t go big
they consider you a bandit.
And it’s this that I’m pondering about,
after reading - again and again -
Berardo’s demand
presented to a noble country squire;
and in my mind raises the arcane doubt
which bedeviled the human kind:
is there a single system of morals,
or is Berardo Viola right too?

And you surely don’t know
about the time when he demanded a hundred coins
from a rich and great lord
because he saw his errand boy
reaching out with his hand
to steal the blond wheat
and secretly loading
four sacks from the farmstead.
Judging this fact
as an extremely serious misdeed,
his sharp intelligence
broke any reticence,
and Berardo - the guilty bandit -
had a sudden inspiration
and said
«If even the errand boy steals
- he who is already being paid by his master -
it shall be lawful - for God’s sake -
for me to steal from him too,
before I get executed
as a desperate man.»
I don’t think he’s ever been to school,
but he’s really shrewd, Berardo Viola.

Yet, the question is enlightening,
typical of a person who knows a great deal;
and I answer ‹Yes, Berardo,
you are right, but late;
because the rich, if he’s powerful,
is a clever person,
but if he doesn’t become a big shot
he’s a terrible bandit.›
Establishing what is bad
is a gigantic endeavor,
when there are people who have lunch and dinner
and people who barely have some bread.
I’m asking you, you great professors,
you jurists and you gentlemen:
is there a single system of morals,
or is Berardo Viola right too?

The answer - dear listeners -
will be a real sweat for many
lawmakers, moralists,
and for us poor devils too.
I confide in conscience
and in your intelligence.

Thanks for this band and this song. Some time ago I got to know this band through a friend of mine, but then completely forgot about it... More by them to come? ;)
