Madame, jetzt ists genug

Song of Pieter Piper
There’s nothing beats the pipe, beats the pipe!
That’s politics enough, yes politics enough!
You have the girls
You take the cash
If I can take a puff
If I can take a puff!
For friendship is a childish dream
And love deceit and lies
So let me have my baccy pipe
That keeps me young and wise.
In Brabant was this woman, woman.
She had a cunning plan, a fearful cunning plan:
I had to ration
To ration baccy
As her obedient spouse
And pious Christian man.
I bite hard on my pipe and say:
Madame, why sermonize?
For all I need’s this stubby pipe
It keeps me young and wise.
A wife won’t give you rest, give you rest,
As fickle Fortune turns on the pikeman in the fight.
And if she takes a fancy to some guest
You've got no bed tonight,
You've got no bed tonight!
So love and hate just as you must
But smoke’s what I advise!
Best taste of all’s the pipe of peace
That keeps us young and wise!

From MUTTER COURAGE UND IHRE KINDER, scene 2, but only in the Berliner Ensemble Buehnenfassung -- and then only the first two stanzas. The third figures in scene 8, but without the last four lines, which are transcribed from Ernst Busch's recording. As far as I can tell, Brecht and Busch introduced this old Dutch folk song (so I read somewhere) into the script of the play when Busch took over the role of the cook, and Paul Dessau arranged the musical setting. To what extent, therefore, it can be thought of as 'by Brecht' is not clear! (Apologies for lack of further information.)
