Written in chalk

On the asphalt I draw
in white chalk the word "enough!".
Enough lies and enough pain.
Liberate yourself.
I draw in white chalk
all that I've long been wanting
Cardiogram lines fly up.
The heart of the world endures its wounds.

We stand in this purple powder, you and I
Life, what kind of shark are you? You're all toothless!
Tomorrow the chalk will dissolve in puddles,
and dozens of cars will leave multicoloured tire marks.

Among white crumbs there is a grey stone
left there by someone for others.
These "wait" and "everywhere" words
I won't remember, I'll forget them.
You can wait for happiness
twenty years if you like.
I have no use for the word "if".
I just can't stay in place.
...in place...

We stand in this purple powder, you and I
Life, what kind of shark are you? You're all toothless!
Tomorrow the chalk will dissolve in puddles,
and dozens of cars will leave multicoloured tire marks.

Fingers in white, fingers in blue
The white chalk is like frost
The blue chalk is like the sky.
Erf... If only I had some red too.

The world looks like a cripple.
It's hard to live in black when colour is your thing1.
I pilfered this chalk in school when I was 112
Too bad it's not enough to colour my whole life.
I pilfered this chalk in school when I was 11
Too bad it's not enough to colour my whole life...

We stand in this purple powder, you and I
Life, what kind of shark are you? You're all toothless!
Tomorrow the chalk will dissolve in puddles,
and dozens of cars will leave multicoloured tire marks. (x2)

  • 1. "you are a colour person"
  • 2. Russian 5th grade. I'd rather not pick a specific US or UK equivalent
Do whatever you want with my translations.
They no more belong to me than the air I breathe.

I think this line needs improvement: it's hard to live in black for a coloured man.
Something along the lines: person who loves colors

silencedsilenced    Παρ, 25/10/2019 - 03:01

Ah ok, thanks. Anything else? There might be symbols I missed.

BlackSea4everBlackSea4ever    Παρ, 25/10/2019 - 03:03

I liked both the source and translation. If it wasn't for you, wouldn't ever known it. Thanks.

silencedsilenced    Παρ, 25/10/2019 - 03:19

They are cuties, arent' they?

SchnurrbratSchnurrbrat    Παρ, 25/10/2019 - 03:20

Maybe multicoloured tire tracks or multicoloured tracks?
and I would use "amid the white crumbs"
You got the Russian right; although I couldn't get these lyrics myself. A mess it is.

The tune is oddly catchy and the girls are kind of touching, like sad kids lost in a sad world.

Couldn't agree more.
I fancied their songs when I was 19-20.
When Viktoria left band due to conflict with producer, Propaganda simly turned in kinda-Поющие трусы-band with weak stupid lyrics, and silly&sexy girls.

silencedsilenced    Σάβ, 26/10/2019 - 16:09

Yes, apparently they change the girls once every few years, when they get too old to play the airhead bimbos I guess? Teeth smile

BlackSea4everBlackSea4ever    Σάβ, 26/10/2019 - 16:11

Yep,
Tomorrow the "aged airhead bimbos" will dissolve in puddles,
and dozens of cars will leave multicoloured tire marks.

The original trio made an accurate prediction, as it appears. They eventually ran out of chalk.
Makes the song even more significant, doesn't it? Wink smile

This "the" in "amid white crumbs" does not compute.
It would mean the white crumbs are already well known, like "the proverbial white crumbs" or something.
Or is it an obvious reference to a fairy tale like "Шалтай-Болтая" ?

SchnurrbratSchnurrbrat    Παρ, 25/10/2019 - 03:49

Please don't listen to my advices on the use of articles. I'm a "little student" in this field Regular smile
I would always use amid / amidst / among with def. art. Imho it means "in the middle of."

silencedsilenced    Παρ, 25/10/2019 - 04:10

This old nickname of mine was taken from this wonderful Chinese ancient novel. The French translation was "petit étudiant" but I settled for "petit élève" instead. A more childish kind of student Regular smile

You're right about "amid", I keep mixing it up with "among". I just can't seem to memorize which one is used for countable things.

SchnurrbratSchnurrbrat    Παρ, 25/10/2019 - 04:25

Wow, you've read it? Nice!
It's on my list, but after finishing the Romance of the Three Kingdoms, I took a break from the Classical Chinese literature. It took me half a year, lol. Ten times more characters than in the Games of Thrones. And all with Chinese single-syllable names! A memory-testing exercise. I believe all four great novels are out with new adapted English translations, that are unabridged but readable. Hard to find them though in libraries.
Apologies for the off-top.
Well, re: prepositions. I had to look it up, you're right there. among means he's surrounded by distinct trees (a countable noun), while amid means he's in the middle of the rain (an uncountable noun). My comment was about the article, and you probably are right there with not using one. It seems that I'd use the def. article after all of the above mentioned prepositions, can't say why. Can't think straight now.

silencedsilenced    Παρ, 25/10/2019 - 04:45

A long time ago, but still got vivid memories of it. Terribly misogynistic, but a great epic novel full of funny and colourful characters who act with a total disregard for established rules. Kind of liberating when you're an idiot software engineer in the 90's wasting your youth on the ancestors of supposedly smart phones.
To be honest, that's about the only bit of Chinese literature I read, not counting the odd Taoist or Zen tale. There are also the delicious Judge Dee detective stories, but these were written by a Dutch! Regular smile

Well, both "among" and "amid" will be followed by "the" when it's about specific object(s). It's rather a matter of singular/uncountable (amid) or plural/countable (among).

Sophia_Sophia_    Παρ, 25/10/2019 - 20:41

Ai-je déjà vu?
Didn't you translate this song a few years ago?  Omg smile
I am puzzled...

silencedsilenced    Παρ, 25/10/2019 - 20:46

It might be. The song sounded somewhat familiar. Or maybe I'm mixing it up with Fleür and their surreal lyrics.

Sophia_Sophia_    Σάβ, 26/10/2019 - 08:51

I do remember we were discussing their (Propaganda's) songs in ... about May 2013, I think Wink smile

Sophia_Sophia_    Παρ, 25/10/2019 - 21:43

С Fleür? Да ну ты что, у этих девочек (1ый состав Пропаганды) совсем другой стиль.

Вот Флер с Лайдой, наверное, еще можно перепутать Wink smile

silencedsilenced    Παρ, 25/10/2019 - 22:08

The only common thing is the highly surreal content. The style is completely different, I agree.
