Morning Prayer

Now another day is breaking,
Sleep was sweet and so is waking.
Dear Lord, I promised you last night
Never again to sulk or fight.
Such vows are easier to keep
When a child is sound asleep.
Today, O Lord, for your dear sake,
I'll try to keep them when awake.

Morgengebet

Nun bricht ein brandneuer Tag an.
Süß der Schlaf, und auch Wachzustand.
O Gott, letzt' Nacht versprach ich Dir,
zu schmoll'n oder streiten nicht mehr.
Versprechen halten fällt einfach,
wenn ein Kind fest schläft bei Nacht.
Deinetwegen soll ich heut' dann
mein Wort halten im Wachzustand.

Ευχαριστώ!

....metered, poetic, rhyming, equirhythmic....wow, well done!
It would be nice if you could record this and give us a link to enjoy the sound of it.
Just an idea ...I hope someday someone will set this to music...

Thanks Flora but I would rather not. Also as hard as I tried to make the German sound good, I really don’t think that it would be good enough for someone to make a recording out of it. For someone to set music to a translation, the translation has to be excellent, and I doubt that it is the case here.

If you want to read German translations that are far better and that deserve to be put to music, look no further than @Vera Jahnke’s, @Bertram Kottmann’s and @Wolfgang Riedmann’s translations.

Why do you say that? Do not underestimate your work, it takes a lot of effort to achieve a metered, rhyming, equirhythmic translation. Anw, i'm just saying that children from Germany and their teachers would love this.

I appreciate the compliment but I just want to be realistic and not full of myself. I don’t mean to underestimate my work just because.

This is good work! No translation is perfect, but you spent the time to make it equirhythmic but at the same time translate what's being said in the English to German correctly, which merits applause. It looks like you spent a lot of time translating this song, and having spent so much time in translating it, you have no right to say that this should not be made into a recording - it's possible and with the commitment to rhythm it should be feasible! I would love to listen to it as a song someday Regular smile
