Don't cry, gal

A bugle like winds from a mountain calls the soldier's rally.
The road leads far away from home1
and the girl, pretending to drop her handkerchief
so that no one would notice, wiped off her tears.

Don’t cry, gal. Our rainy days will come to an end,
and your soldier will come back, you just wait.
Though your dear friend is far away,
love will prevail over farewells.

I've not gone very far. I'm no general yet
but I might make it to sergeant major.
Forgive me, I couldn't say I will be brave
and you will become my bride.

Don’t cry, gal. Our rainy days will come to an end,
and your soldier will come back, you just wait.
Though your dear friend is far away,
love will prevail over farewells.

The sergeant major of our company has got a medal,
I'm still a long way from there,
but love, behold all the perfect merit badges2
that cover my chest

Don’t cry, gal. Our rainy days will come to an end,
and your soldier will come back, you just wait.
Though your dear friend is far away,
love will prevail over farewells.

Don’t cry, gal. Our rainy days will come to an end,
and your soldier will come back, you just wait.

Don’t cry, gal. Our rainy days will come to an end,
and your soldier will come back, you just wait.
Though your dear friend is far away,
love will prevail over farewells.

  • 1. lit. "the road is far from the doorstep", playing on доpога/поpога

...что буду смел = I will be brave.
И то, что будешь ты моей женой = and you will be my wife. He doesn't ask her to become his wife :)
Пускай далёко твой веpный дpуг.
I would translate it as "your sweetheart is far away"

Олег Л.Олег Л.    Πέμ, 12/04/2018 - 22:49

Yes. "I couldn't find the words to say that I will be brave and that you will become my wife".
Пускай далёко твой веpный дpуг = your faithful friend (literally) may be far away...

Олег Л.Олег Л.    Πέμ, 12/04/2018 - 22:57

The matter is they are friends so far, not lovers :)

Олег Л.Олег Л.    Πέμ, 12/04/2018 - 22:52

I guess, разлука = parting

Олег Л.Олег Л.    Πέμ, 12/04/2018 - 23:04

I know that "to part" means расставаться

Олег Л.Олег Л.    Πέμ, 12/04/2018 - 23:08

It was my favorite song when I was 3 years old :)

Олег Л.Олег Л.    Πέμ, 12/04/2018 - 23:33

I got.
Hо ты, любовь, зачти отличные значки means "but you, my love, notice (pay your attention) my badges for the great service".
Котоpые теснятся на гpуди = on my chest
....имеет оpдена = has lots of medals

Олег Л.Олег Л.    Παρ, 13/04/2018 - 00:05

This is just a rhyme "зачти-значки".
You got right what means дорога от порога. Of course, it doesn't mean "the road is far from the doorstep".

Олег Л.Олег Л.    Παρ, 13/04/2018 - 00:14

The Russian said "I will be brave", not "strong". The Russian knows what he says.

IgeethecatIgeethecat    Παρ, 13/04/2018 - 02:34

He could’t say...that she will be his wife, this is the part of the same sentence

And remember, he is 18, in Soviet Union in 70’s, what can he possibly know about political correctness LOL

IgeethecatIgeethecat    Παρ, 13/04/2018 - 02:44

‘Be my wife’ sounds fine, they say ‘would you be my wife’ when they propose
You can say ‘you will marry me’ if you like it better or something poetic like ‘I want to spend my life with you’

And big no on the second one. This is not what it is all about. There is an innocent juvenile talk about him wanting be with her, you are overthinking. Maybe it has different meaning in French ?

IgeethecatIgeethecat    Παρ, 13/04/2018 - 03:08

we are not talking slang here, so ‘wife’ really means spouse, жена, супруга, not sexual toy
Maybe ‘bride’ instead of ‘wife’ will make you more comfortable?

IgeethecatIgeethecat    Παρ, 13/04/2018 - 13:09

He does not. He just says sorry that he didn’t tell her that. That’s not a promise in any language

IgeethecatIgeethecat    Παρ, 13/04/2018 - 02:15

First line - солдаты - should be солдату, the meaning changes completely. They are talking about sound of trumpets that call the soldier to get ready for enlistment. Here is your favorite «перепела-перепёлки», there is no subject- трубят = они (трубы) трубят

Пройдут дожди - не один дождь, не два, а много дождей - it means time will pass

Разлука - you got it fine, there is a little nuance - not just are apart, but someone or something split them apart against their will

Пpости что не сумел сказать что буду смел
И то что будешь ты моей женой
He couldn’t say that he’ll be brave and she will be his wife - he is not proposing, not even asking her, he is just so sure that this is what she wants...oh, men;)

IgeethecatIgeethecat    Παρ, 13/04/2018 - 02:58

Пройдут дожди - согласно толковому словарю, слово дождь «Возможно, образовано сращением индоевропейских основ dus и djus с исходным значением «плохой день, плохая погода»». Maybe this will help?

IgeethecatIgeethecat    Παρ, 13/04/2018 - 03:23

Right, but in Russian it is more personal, something that happens to them (boy and girl), not just rain season will pass, more like they will pass/survive rain season/many rain days

IgeethecatIgeethecat    Παρ, 13/04/2018 - 03:29

Sounds good to me, you can probably something like

Don’t cry little girl. When our rain days are over,
Your soldier will be back to you

Олег Л.Олег Л.    Παρ, 13/04/2018 - 07:51

This is just a rhyme дожди - жди. That's all. Пройдут дожди = пройдет время

IgeethecatIgeethecat    Παρ, 13/04/2018 - 04:30

Пускай далёко твой веpный дpуг
Let your faithful friend be on his way

First, faithful, I think is too intimate in this context, it’s more like ‘dear friend’, BFF; on the other note, when I see верный друг , I always recall собака - твой верный друг :)
Second, he is not on his way, not even close to be on his way, he has (about) 2 years to serve in army; he is just far away

And there is a typo in 5th stanza, I believe - ‘itself’; and badges, sound better than tokens or decorations, but I am not an expert in military stuff

The last one (maybe) - you have ‘sweet girl’ in the title, but ‘little girl’ in the lyrics, any reason? Sweet girl sounds... well sweet ( I vote for this one), little girl - it’s like she is 5 years old... don’t try to find direct translation to девчонка - it’s too Russian. Both translations are fine, just should not you stick with one?

IgeethecatIgeethecat    Παρ, 13/04/2018 - 05:33

Not, no childhood friend, sounds childish, though you got it right, devoted, loyal or something like this maybe?

Yes

Sorry, can’t help you on this one, you should ask some native English-speaker  with military experience

Well, девчонка is just informal for девушка (young woman), девочка (young girl); no sexual content (No slang involved); it is the one of the ones that are really hard to translate or even explain to non-speaker, no offense

Treugol'nyTreugol'ny    Παρ, 13/04/2018 - 08:27

I think this song sounds awful in English and I would never try to translate it. I did start the translation and gave it up after the first verse.
I'm sorry if I have offended someone, but that's just my opinion .

Олег Л.Олег Л.    Παρ, 13/04/2018 - 08:30

Pierre, I'll make my translation.

sandringsandring    Παρ, 13/04/2018 - 09:29

I believe that's quite a good translation. Remember this song smells of the Soviet Union times and Pierre was far away, lucky him. With a little help from a friend, it'll look nice.

1. Don't cry, gal (the closest equivalent.) If somebody says otherwise, don't listen, Pierre :)
2. calls for the soldiers' rally
3. A girl dropped her handkerchief for no one to see her wipe off a tear.
4. Our rainy days will be over (assertive)
5. Though your dear (faithful) friend is far away,
love will prevail over farewells.
6. I haven't covered enough land on march
7. would be brave, would be my bride (Future in the Past)
8. has got medals (plural), they are in stock for me in future
9. Hо ты любовь зачти отличные значки = But you, love, take into account the marks of distinction

And this is it. These minor corrections give the right touch to Pierre's translation which is quite good if you ask me. :)

sandringsandring    Παρ, 13/04/2018 - 12:07

Oleg, I thought they were called Marks of Distinction, I meant them.

Олег Л.Олег Л.    Παρ, 13/04/2018 - 12:19

Отличный значок = значок за отличную службу. There is the difference between "отличие" и "отличный".
Мол, обрати внимание на значки на моей груди. Не на знаки отличия.

IgeethecatIgeethecat    Παρ, 13/04/2018 - 13:31

Oh, don’t give up please
Your translation was wonderful without those question marks, you did such a good job
Native wouldn’t express it better so we don’t even dare to try it:)

sandringsandring    Παρ, 13/04/2018 - 10:27

Sounds very sensible to me, Pierre. Cultural things are sometimes beyond our understanding, at least in this life. :)

sandringsandring    Παρ, 13/04/2018 - 12:29

Ну, знаете, вы, мужчины, разбирайтесь сами с вашими знаками отличия ^^ :)

Олег Л.Олег Л.    Παρ, 13/04/2018 - 12:34

Правильно. Я и показал те значки, которые многие из нас носили, когда служили в армии.

Treugol'nyTreugol'ny    Παρ, 13/04/2018 - 13:33

Ах, значки! Три года отслужил в Советской армии, был отличным солдатом, но значков никогда не имел. Ни одной минуты сна из-за этого не потерял. Служил по принципу: Как одену портупею, так дурею и дурею. Вот мне и спать пришла пора- спокойной ночи детвора!

sandringsandring    Παρ, 13/04/2018 - 14:05

Pierre, I'll give you the explanation and you'll see for yourself what can be done in terms of the wording.

2. Не много прошагал (It's a verb in the negative) I haven't marched my lot (troops and soldiers - they march, so he means he hasn't marched/served long enough to become a general. It's an allusion to an earlier song Как хорошо быть генералом by Khil.
3. I failed to say you would be my wife
4. medals (where's the problem)
5. Badges of distinction which cover my chest. Medals against badges. Badges show achievements of a soldier. Medals show deeds

IgeethecatIgeethecat    Παρ, 13/04/2018 - 15:59

I agree with sanding

We discussed the wife thing last night and though it is perfectly fine in Russian and English, it looks like it somehow offensive in French. I suggested “to be my bride” - basically the same thing

This song is very hard to translate, but you nailed it! Good job!
