Onisilos

Next to me stood Onisilos
having emerged out of history and legend
in flesh and bones*.

The brave leader King
was holding in his hand what he was left with
an empty scull
- his own head-
full of bees.

For ten years Onisilos kept sending his bees
to sting us
to awaken us
to deliver us a message

Ten thousand bees were sent by Onisilos
and they all damned-died on our thick-skin
without us feeling anything.

And when the marching steps of the enemies
reached Salamina
Onisilos outraged.
He couldn't stand it anymore.
He grabbed his scull
and smashed it over my head.

And i dropped dead.
Inglorious,wrecked
cursed by Onisilos.

According to the historian Herodotus, Onisilos, king of Salamis in Cyprus, with the help of Ionians (Ionian revolution-Asia Minor) incited all the kingdoms of Cyprus in a revolt against the Persians in 499 BC. Only the kingdom of Amathounta and Courion abstained and he had to besiege them. The Cypriot revolution failed. Onisilos did not achieve the unity that was so necessary among cypriot kingdoms ( there were 14 kingdoms) .The Curians, the Amathusians and a portion of the Salamis soldiers supporting Onisilos's dethroned brother, Gorgos, surrendered and allied with the Persians.
After this defeat the tyranny of the Persians became more harsh and Cypriots were deprived of their freedom . Phoenicians and Persian supporters replaced the previous Greek-supporting kings .
After Onisilos was killed, Amathusians , took their revenge on him and they nailed his head to a pole. After some time, the skull was filled with bees producing honey inside the hollow scull. This was considered to be a miraculous sign by the gods. The Amathousians asked for an oracle and they were informed that they should bury Onisilos with heroic honors . Otherwise Apollo's curse would fall on the city.
In the poem, Onisilos appears to the poet, who writes the poem after the tragic events of the bi-communal riots , the coup and the Turkish invasion of 1974.
