Poem 20

I can write the saddest verses tonight.

Write, for example: "It is a starlit night,
and they shiver, blue, the stars, in the distance."

The night wind spins in the sky and sings.

I can write the saddest verses tonight.
I loved her, and at times she too loved me.

On nights like this I had her in my arms.
I kissed her so many times under the infinite sky.

She loved me, at times I too loved her.
How could I not love her big unwavering eyes.

I can write the saddest verses tonight.
To think that I don't have her. To feel that I have lost her.

To listen to the immense night, more immense without her.
And the verse falls upon the soul like dew on the grass.

How much it matters that my love could not keep her.
It is a starlit night and she is not with me.

That is all. In the distance someone sings. In the distance.
My soul is not pleased with having lost her.

As if to draw her near, my eyes look for her.
My heart looks for her, and she is not with me.

The same night that pales the same trees.
We, ever since then, are no longer the same.

I no longer love her, it's true, but how I loved her.
My voice looked for the wind to touch her ear.

Another. She will belong to another. Like my kisses did in the past.
Her voice, her fair skin. Her enormous eyes.

I no longer love her, it's true, but perhaps I do love her.
Love is so short, and oblivion is so long.

Because on nights like this I had her in my arms,
my soul is not pleased with having lost her.

Although this will be the last grief that she causes me,
and these will be the last verses that I will write to her.
