στίχοι The Four Ages of Man

He with body waged a fight,
But body won; it walks upright.

Then he struggled with the heart;
Innocence and peace depart.

Then he struggled with the mind;
His proud heart he left behind.

Now his wars on God begin;
At stroke of midnight God shall win.

Dear [@BlueBird],
please don't annotate songs without talking to people who added them first, especially when you don't know what you're talking about.
There's no "midnight God" in the poem. There's "stroke of midnight" and there's God. Yeats was a Christian. There are no different deities in Christianity, just one - Jesus Christ.

[@Dr_Igor] The poem does not belong to you. No one needs your permission to annotate or anything else. If you disagree, add another civil annotation instead of being rude.

I advised you to talk to the song "publisher" first because it is not immediately obvious that the publisher did not make the annotation. Not everybody knows that you need to do a mouse-over to discover at the end of the fine print who is the annotator. I don't want to appear as the author of the annotation, especially when it is incorrect.
There's no obvious way to delete an incorrect annotation. Why not write a regular comment? Then it can be objected to, discussed, edited, deleted and it would have a clear attribution.
Do you agree that your annotation in this particular case was incorrect and irrelevant?

I agree with Igor here. Midnight here doesn't refer to any nocturnal deity, but to a specific time of the day. *At stroke of midnight* is something, *God shall win* is something else. Just invert the phrase: God shall win at stroke of midnight - and you'll have it.

And also, Juan, the structure of the English sentence there would not allow the "midnight God" interpretation in which "at stroke" would be
impossible to explain.

"Midnight here doesn't refer to any nocturnal deity" - exactly the same I wrote in Russian commentary on Igor's translation!
