義満公のお楽しみ
Yes 能 枕に聞く
人生の裏表

こんにちは

笛方増え方ヤバい
小鼓方に小包届き
狂言方 今日も元気
地唄方 渋滞で遅刻

悶々とした日々

Zeami

When he sees Fujiwaka-chan1
From the seating on stage right
Of the noh theater
Lord Yoshimitsu2 says:
"Hello"

The guy playing the lead really made the show, huh?3
Totally made the guy playing his attendant look boring.
And I didn't even look once at the supporting actor!
He even has the pit band cheering.

Carefree days,
Lord Yoshimitsu's having fun
Ask your pillow: Yes? noh?
The two faces of life

San'yo Main Line
to Suma Beach4--
The wind's blowing through the pine trees

Three-act structure; The delivery of the lines
Should start slow, speed up, and end quickly

Once you get the rhythm, next decide the method of vocalization
First, the mood; second, the timing; third, the voice5

Supernatural phenomenon, a strange experience
Dream noh6

The middle of the Muromachi period7
A great atmosphere
A Discourse on Pentatonic Melody8

A public performance in Kamakura
All the signs say "Thanks, Sold Out"
Nighttime noh by the fire

His jealousy is intense, isn't it?
He's pretty scary, huh?
The sunset's not quite over9

Tonight, quietly
Ask your pillow: Yes or noh?
"What is hidden blooms"10
"Never forget what it was like to be a beginner"

Zeami
is being carefree11
Kan'ami1
is feeling lighthearted
Zeami
Nohs how to play the lead role12
Without freaking out over it
Yes noh yes noh

Zeami

Kan'ami

Nohs how to play the lead role
Without freaking out over it
Yes noh yes noh

When he sees Fujiwaka-chan
From the seating on stage right
Of the noh theater
Lord Yoshimitsu says:
"Hello"

It was crazy how they kept adding more and more flutists!
I'm sending the kotsuzumi player a nice little gift.
The comic actors were really spirited again today!
The chorus is late, they got stuck in traffic...

Anxiety-ridden days when
Lord Yoshinori is acting frigid
Ask your pillow: Yes? noh?

  • 1. a. b. Another name for Zeami.
  • 2. Zeami's patron and a shogun, who met Zeami when he was 17 performing at Yoshimitsu's court.
  • 3. The two stanzas spoken by people commenting on the Noh show they just saw have puns in each line, which is why they sound kind of weird in English. For example, in the second stanza, the last pun is on 地唄 jiutai, "noh chorus", and 渋滞 juutai, "traffic".
  • 4. An important location in one of Zeami's most famous noh works, Atsumori.
  • 5. These are quotes from Zeami's treatises on drama.
  • 6. A type of noh where a traveler visits a place and meets a local who tells them a strange, fantastic story that happened there. Then they tell the traveler "I was the person in the story", and vanish.
  • 7. This is when Zeami was an adult.
  • 8. A treatise on music by Zeami.
  • 9. The word here I translated as "not quite over", 生成, "namanari", is also the word for the mask worn by a certain noh character--a woman who is half-beast, filled with rage at her husband's infidelity.
  • 10. This line and the next are famous Zeami quotes.
  • 11. carefree=のうのうと, "nounou to". Get it?
  • 12. This line sounds the same as the first line of this stanza and would be interpreted by the listener in the same way, but the way it's written uses different characters that include the kanji for noh drama and the word for a lead role in noh, so I translated it like this.
