Let's Start Something

Versions: #1#2
Let's start something
So that the smoldering (passion) burns between us.
Some something for us.
Let's squirm, and bend love.
Let's set these weekdays on fire billowing white smoke
Some something for us.
Verse 1:
I'll scream to you through your window if I must
about how lonely I am without you.
And once again, everyone's giving me grief,
and it's all going badly.
Julia, it's (like) a hurricane. You fell in love with an idiot.
(Hit like by a) bullet (or a) hurricane. You fell in love with an idiot.
Verse 2:
My mom says you're so bad for me.
But they don’t understand our love at all.
And I won't sleep at home ever again.
They'll never catch us, ever.
Let's make something for ourselves. Let the days fly by.
We won't forget a single minute, not one.
Let's start something for us. Let them say what they want.
'cause you and I are so alike, and we just want to be left alone.

We just want to be left alone( rather than "as one") And I'm again taking junk, but it's all end up badly, badly, badly... I think, it's a better way of translating Russian slang. Definitely, nothing about ghetto and getting off lightly.

Phil AmbroPhil Ambro    Sat, 22/12/2018 - 12:39

Thanks for your help. I really had no idea what "being in garbage" and "sideways" was supposed to be. Thanks for clearing that up for me. Duly noted.

I'm not sure myself about Russian slang. I do know there is an expression "мне это вышло боком" ( end up badly). About "хлам" I'm not sure. It does mean "junk"

sandringsandring    Sat, 22/12/2018 - 13:22

Hi, Phil
Замутить=закрутить=закрутить любовь=закрутить роман= have a love affair, become lovers
I don't care
Уля=Ульяна (а popular name now)

Might I suggest, "Let's start a relationship" or "Let's start our love story ", rather than "Let's get dirty, oh so dirty."

I'm Russian. And my English is very bad. I'm sorry.

"замутим" (infinitive "мутить") it's a youth slang word. It mean: "иметь отношения между парнем и девушкой; близкие отношения; любовь".

I don't know how to say it in English.

sandringsandring    Sat, 22/12/2018 - 13:25

IgeethecatIgeethecat    Sat, 22/12/2018 - 18:48

Yeah, Phil, “get dirty” is too dirty, it’s rather “hook up” Regular smile

Russian sentence structure is so weird. Is it supposed to be "Julia fell in love like an idiot" or "Julia fell in love with a idiot" ?
Julia - it's a hurricane. (she) fell in love {accusative "jerk"}. Is really hard to understand. And, it's not even slang. A verb once in awhile would be nice my Russian songwriters. A verb would be greatly helpful. Just saying. I have to guess what verb is missing. I choose "She so stupidly fell in love." And, as for the slang title, in English we have a lot of slang for "starting a relationship" too. But, this song sounds like it's about sex too. So "Let's get dirty" really is ok. It's sounds exactly like what she's saying, "burning smoldering (sex)". "Let's hook-up" does NOT mean to start a relationship at all. That means, "Let's have sex, and never see each other again. You don't even have to tell me your name." So are you sure that's what it should be Iggy? LOL

IgeethecatIgeethecat    Sun, 23/12/2018 - 12:41

Maybe it meant a ‘one night stand’ a long time ago, but today’s kids hook up differently. The same way in my time, Cry smile

Phil AmbroPhil Ambro    Sun, 23/12/2018 - 17:40

LOL. If we Americans had only known that there was no sex in the USSR, we could have just waited for the population to go down to about 10,000 and take over. But alas, I tend to think that perhaps you are wrong there. (Wink) I never saw the Russian population decrease, so unless Russians procreate some other way, you probably are mistaken. LOL

IgeethecatIgeethecat    Sun, 23/12/2018 - 18:07

Ah, that. Lol
Well, late 80’s early 90’s. PERESTROIKA, GLASNOST
One of the first talk show airs (big deal!)
And they are talking about sex (forbidden topic in USSR)
And a woman in the audience stands up and sincerely spits out «у нас, в Советском Союзе, секса нет»

Phil AmbroPhil Ambro    Sun, 23/12/2018 - 21:11

Now that's f'n funny. Did the audience laugh?

IgeethecatIgeethecat    Sun, 23/12/2018 - 21:28

Honestly, I don’t remember. Because next 15 minutes I was laughing silly Cry smile

IgeethecatIgeethecat    Sun, 23/12/2018 - 21:46

«На телевидении» у нас в то время было 2 канала - первый и второй. Секса ни на одном из них не помню в упор

Евпатий ЧепухаЕвпатий Чепуха    Sun, 23/12/2018 - 21:49

Так она об этом и говорила, что на телевидении в СССР секса нет. И была абсолютно права.

Phil AmbroPhil Ambro    Mon, 24/12/2018 - 01:49

LMAO. That's so funny. Well, back in the 80s porn and tv was separated. Now, it's becoming the same thing. But, back in the 80s we had talk shows about sex. Dr. Ruth was my favorite. She was a short, old woman who spoke English with a German accent, and she would say very explicit things. Nothing funnier than hearing a grandmother speak about sex with an accent. She was very serious, but it just sounded so funny. Regular smile

Hansi K_LauerHansi K_Lauer    Mon, 24/12/2018 - 03:52

Oh yes, I know her.
She was Dr Ruth Westheimer.
She appeared once in a while as a guest in Talkshows and as an expert in science ducumentaries.
She spoke German with a German accent.
Wink smile

"Мутить"... This is sex and relationships. Not only sex.
"Get dirty" is sex only. I think.

Phil AmbroPhil Ambro    Sat, 22/12/2018 - 22:24

You're right. But, the rest of the song implies it's more than sex. The let's get dirty part is only about sex. So, yes, you're right.

I am hearing «поле это ураган» «уля - это ураган»
When I checked the lyrics on Apple Music and Musixmatch it says the same thing «полe»

sandringsandring    Sat, 05/01/2019 - 06:04
