На горе стоит сосёнка

На горе стоит сосёнка,
Под горою баобаб.
Странный взгляд у поросёнка,
Когда смотрит он на баб.

English translation (equirhythmic, rhyming)

Little Pine Stands On The Hillside

Little pine stands on the hillside,
Underneath: a palm tree1 grows.
Weird look's in piglet's deep eyes
When it looks at naked broads.

  • 1. lit. - baobab; playing on a contradiction here (pines and baobabs don't grow together) to introduce the hook

"Weird" has 2 syllables: [ wɪrd ]

BratBrat    Wed, 13/03/2019 - 16:57

[ wɪrd ] is the American variant and as well as the British [ wɪəd ] it contains a diphthong, doesn't it?

St. SolSt. Sol    Wed, 13/03/2019 - 17:05

Yes, it does. In poetry this particular diphthong is preferably pronounced as 2 syllables (whereas many others can be routinely shortened to a single syllable in lyrics). Regards, St.

That's very interesting. Usually diphthongs fall under diaeresis depending on where they are placed in a certain string. And when a diphthong is placed in the very beginning of a string it's pronounced as 1 syllable in most cases, as far as I know. Unless some special measures are taken to split it (but I don't see any such in this particular case).

Without getting too theoretical, "weird" is a weird word that most natives tend to split: it's [ wiiii-rd ], I know. Regular smile

Unfortunately, I can't: if you haven't noticed, some of LT TPTBs decided that too much truth about their actions and quality of their own translations could not be tolerated, and they stripped me of the editor status.

Well, when I read this verse I almost hear Piglet's squeaking "Wee!.. Wee!.. Winnie, I'm weird, I'm queer, I'm eery... Those broads seem to be disguised heffalumps!.."

Да, вот такие у них фамилии - с тонким намёком на толстые обстоятельства...
Но зато честно: кто будет плохо себя вести, тот получит по заслугам.
