English

From Horace, Satire, 1.3. Means "from beginning to end", based on the Roman main meal typically beginning with an egg dish and ending with fruit; cf. the English phrase soup to nuts. Thus, ab ovo means "from the beginning", and can connote thoroughness.

"Ab ovo" in lyrics

Xavier Naidoo - Latin

Ab ovo, from the beginning
I did not really understand
How someone, summa summarum, all in all
Claims his rule through division

Xavier Naidoo - Latein

Ab ovo, von Anfang an
Hab ich nicht ganz verstanden
Wie man summa summarum, alles in allem
Durch Teilung zur Herrschaft gelangt
