Why is the fear of death penetrating and penetrating me again through marrow and bone?
What trickles through the rigid limbs and shakes me like fever pain?
Has old bloodguilt inscribed me once in the book of life? [1]
Are my hands not clean from the eternal curse of the crime?
A murderous sinner hides under my foreboding? number [2]
And does an angry god swing a ray of vengeance on children and children's children? [3]
I know nothing of such dark traces of my own cursed deed
I wander through life's corridors simply like another path
Have I strove too boldly for clear knowledge, for uncolored light?
Have I too boldly torn the veil that weaves around children's eyes? [4]
I have never hesitated before the bugbear of the cowardly world!
Your breath trembles because every day is only debt.
You are dying while you live [5]
You know: you are not, because you are [5]
Why is the fear of death penetrating and penetrating me again through marrow and bone?
What trickles through the rigid limbs and shakes me like fever pain?
An old word is written
It floats to me
It's partially clear in my mind
It sounds to me like fear of the creature
Stand before ghosts on the battlefield
That settles on the chest like lead
If I can look the enemy in the eye,
the breath will be free again.
And he always proceeded thoroughly, walking in the enemy's ranks
So be it! Only death can set you free
from all the fear of the creature!

Author's comments:

I'm a native english speaker from the US. My German skills are only intermediate, but I can give some cultural context for people who aren't from the west and have added notes in some places where I have doubts about the translation.

I think this song is about the fear of being sent to hell.
Many of us who were raised as Christians but no longer believe in Christianity still have a lingering fear that we will be tortured in hell after we die because we don't believe in Christianity any more.

1. I think "Lebend'gen Buch" refers to the biblical "Book of life"
"Alte Blutschuld" might refer to the crime of killing Jesus, which is said to have washed away the sins of whoever believes in him
Or it might refer to the "original sin" of Adam and Eve who ate the fruit from the tree of knowledge of good and evil.
2. "Ahnen Zahl" could also be "ancestral number", but this is a strange lyric to me in context. I wonder whether the original German is correct. A Native German might be able to give more info about what this means.
3. I think a more literal translation would be "child and child of child" because "kind" is singular, but that sounds strange in English.
The songwriter might have had the bible verse Exodus 20:5 in mind
4. The songwriter might have been thinking of Matthew 16:8
5. The capitalization infers that "sie" is third person and means "she", but I think second person makes more sense in this context. I think "sie" was supposed to be capitalized in the German lyrics.

The author of translation requested proofreading.
It means that he/she will be happy to receive corrections, suggestions etc about the translation.
If you are proficient in both languages of the language pair, you are welcome to leave your comments.
