Ar hyd y nos

Holl amrantau'r sêr ddywedant
Ar hyd y nos
"Dyma'r ffordd i fro gogoniant,"
Ar hyd y nos.
Golau arall yw tywyllwch
I arddangos gwir brydferthwch
Teulu'r nefoedd mewn tawelwch
Ar hyd y nos.
O mor siriol, gwena seren
Ar hyd y nos
I oleuo'i chwaer ddaearen
Ar hyd y nos.
Nos yw henaint pan ddaw cystudd
Ond i harddu dyn a'i hwyrddydd
Rhown ein golau gwan i'n gilydd
Ar hyd y nos.

All through the night

Versions: #1#2
All the stars' winks1 are saying
all through the night
"this is the road for the vale of glory"
all though the night.
Any other light is darkness
that displays true beauty,
heaven's family in silence
all through the night.
How happily the star smiles
all through the night
to illuminate2 her earthly sister
all through the night.
Old age is night when sickness comes
but to make people beautiful in their evening3
all through the night.
we give our weak light to each other
all through the night.
  • 1. lit: eyelids (?)
  • 2. or inform or enlighten?
  • 3. hwyrddydd looks like a combination of hywr (late) with dydd (day) so I gues it's "evening" but probably in the figurative sense "the evening of life" or "last days"

Author's comments:

Ar hyd y nos translated in bits is "along the night", I think; but every English version of this song I've heard translates it "All through the night" which is probably what "along the night" means.
