"A Banya Of White" was written in 1968. It has been said that Vysotsky's work is difficult to understand even to native Russians. To take his words as only literal is to never truly know him or his intentions. His frustrations are evident even within this song.
A banya of white and the allusions of light, brightness and its alternate meanings are constant in this piece. The banya represents his place of peace,
a paradise, clean and pure with which to express being alive, unfettered by oppression of the human spirit. One might even equate the proprietress to an angel.
It should be noted there is an underlying tone that is anti-Soviet and expresses the frustrations and feeling of imprisonment in much of his work.
The intoxication, the stupor of escaping all the hardships of reality, not poisoning. The words in themselves cannot be taken literally and be understood.
It is very important to be able to comprehend the link between what looks at first to be a common banya and the theme underlying there.
Remember Vysotsky had to dance around censorship, punishment, and possible internment in Siberia. His "lion's chest" indicating he had braved it all. The trials he endured, all in vain.
He speaks of this when referring to the two guards hauling him off to Siberia as well, or images (allusions like tattoos are common amongst prisoners confined),
to feeling the need for punishment within himself (the dark times). The word наколка (nakolka) refers to either a ruse, a trick or a practical joke,
but also, it can mean the crude tattoos made in prison and labour camps of the Stalinist era. Covert rebellion was also a common theme there.
Actually, Stalin's portrait was very common amongst prisoners. A dark sense of humour indicating Stalin was in control of and had you for life. A badge. a label, of honour as it were.
The situation was a difficult one for his marriages. He went through three. At the time Marina (Marinka) was his girlfriend so she was on his chest (lose to his heart like satirically Comrade Stalin).
Vysotsky was a very troubled soul that fought many years with his intense feelings and their expression while being confined by society's rules.
He was labeled, a marked man, 'branded' in a matter speaking one of the anti-Soviet scum prior to his films being aired. Yet he remained under suspicion throughout his life.
He surely must have been troubled too that his listeners would not all openly and fully understand his work. That is a common thread amongst many artists.
The images of Stalin over the left chest (representing the sinister, evil side) and the image of Marina over the left chest (representing the right/good side) are allusions.
A sub note, to my knowledge Vysotsky had no tattoos nor prison time that would relegate his words to actual experience and proof, so everything is then allusions to be interpreted so.

Marina Vlady was a French actress that was always 'near his heart'. She was married to Vladimir Vysotsky from 1969 until his death in 1980. Marinka is a familiar name. They are one and the same person.
